Having home offices is an everlasting and practical trend.
Our final taste from the transformations in the Villa Bela Vista project is this cozy, contemporary, and functional home office. For this project, we designed a simple, clean, and convenient home office for our clients to work in the best mood possible with comfort and peace.
Creating a new bedroom from scratch is always full of fun challenges and opportunities to dare and deliver something fresh.
The main bedroom from the Bela Vista project had to fit in with the overall vibe of the design while still being unique. For that, we created a sophisticated space with a contemporary neutral base punctuated by a burst of color with added depth to the design through the contrast of texture and quality materials.
Transform your living room with the Gregory sofa by Flexform!
With its generous proportions and superior level of comfort, the Gregory sofa by Antonio Citterio is sure to play a starring role in any living room. Its bold personality shows in every detail, from the unique metal base softened by the elegant cowhide strips to the couture grosgrain piping that outlines the soft goose-down cushions.
The brief for the Villa Bela Vista Estoril project was a specific design with an eclectic mix of rustic and contemporary features and fun colors. So, we carefully based our choices on the brief while focused on delivering an elegant, comfy annex bedroom for our clients to enjoy.
Let’s dive into this week with the first stunning transformation from our Villa Bela Vista project!
The team at Casa Alta Design loves receiving a blank canvas for transformation and making something entirely new and unique. The Villa Bela Vista living room started as a space full of potential. So, with bespoke cabinetry in matt lacquer, American walnut, and grey Portuguese marble, it became this breathtaking room.
The time to find new furniture inspirations is coming this February!
The Stockholm Furniture Fair is Scandinavia’s leading platform for furniture, lighting design, and architecture. Held annually in Stockholm, Sweden, the fair attracts architects, designers, interior decorators, buyers, and enthusiasts everywhere. In addition, the fair provides opportunities for new and emerging designers and design brands to showcase their work, helping them to gain exposure and establish themselves in the industry.
Finally, yet importantly, we proudly present you with the master bedroom transformation from the Sugar Quay project.
By using juxtaposition and the layering of materials such as American walnut, eco-leather, silk rugs, light-colored fabrics, and smoked glass, we achieved this rich yet contemporary palette, balancing each element within a constrained framework of proportions and placement on the Sugar Quay master bedroom.
The Sugar Quay deserved a fresh, modern, and exclusive kitchen.
The Casa Alta Design always loves an opportunity to design the most delicious kitchen. This time, we went all in for an ergonomic and biophilic space. With the help of our trusted allies – the best appliances, exclusive cabinetry, and beautiful greenery – we could deliver a unique design. The overall goal was a modern, rustic, and organic kitchen, so the biophilic touch was integral to achieving that warm and elegant vibe.
Every project and design is unique, and the guest bedroom from Sugar Quay was no exception.
The challenge of designing a complete bedroom from scratch is always fun and full of possibilities. For this guest bedroom, we wanted to provide a cozy and sophisticated space for our clients’ guests to feel at home. With the help of the best fabrics, a contemporary color palette, warm lighting, a luxurious walk-in closet, and stunning bespoke cabinetry, this room achieved its full potential.
Sugar Quay was an unforgettable project, so it needed an unforgettable main bathroom.
One of the most essential elements in this bathroom was the most technologically advanced spa bathtub we have ever installed. We also selected a blend of wood, dark technical stone, glass, and dark bronze equipment to create a streamlined yet rich ambiance. The bespoke corrugated glass shower enclosure framed in bronze complements the space.
This week’s transformations are in one of our most cherished projects: Sugar Quay.
An inviting blank canvas for our team, the Sugar Quay lounge has sweeping views of London and had to work as a functional space both in the private and public spheres. With that in mind, we incorporated powerhouse technology, bespoke cabinetry, and incredible items from exceptional designers such as the legendary Sergio Rodrigues and hot European brands such as Flexform and Boca do Lobo.

The final before & after of the Cascais Retreat project is the vibrant living room.
The old living room was minimalist and filled with dark and somber colors, not suitable for a lively family home. With the assistance of bright and inviting colors, amazing artwork by Vanessa Barragão, custom-made shelving by Wewood, stunning togo sofa and armchairs, we completely transformed this room into a vibrant and joyful space.
The week began with the Cascais Retreat breakfast bar, and now we shift our focus to the complete kitchen of this memorable project.
The original home in Cascais had a small, dark, and narrow galley kitchen. However, the vibrant family we were working with deserved a fun, colorful, and spacious area for both meals and meal preparation. As a result, the Casa Alta Design team created a delightful open-plan kitchen that includes smart storage solutions, bespoke cabinetry, and high end appliances.
The first version of the Cascais Retreat bedroom was full of darker colours and didn’t feel like home for the clients. So, our mission was clear!
The Casa Alta Design team knew what was needed: lighter colours, new bedding, lighting solutions and new stunning landscape wallpaper by Papermint. And just like that, the new Cascais bedroom gave the most inviting and relaxing vibes.
The old Cascais Retreat lounge received a stunning Casa Alta Design transformation.
The project brief was to infuse this space with personality and incorporate existing items brought over from Paris. To achieve this, we utilized vibrant colors and re-arranged the artwork, creating an ambiance that matched the clients’ brief and provided a comfortable and cosy feeling.
Here we are, embarking on another week of extraordinary transformations!
There’s nothing quite like waking up and enjoying a delightful breakfast with your loved ones. Therefore, for the Cascais Retreat project, we endeavored to completely overhaul a small and underutilized corner, transforming it into a stylish open-plan kitchen. With the assistance of top-notch appliances, custom-made cabinetry, and inviting colors, we successfully created an incredible open plan kitchen with a breakfast bar tailored specifically for a dynamic and vibrant family.
Transform a room to a better and timeless version with Giorgetti’s Kaleido rug!
Made by hand using a tufting technique with bamboo silk and linen, the Kaleido rug is a showstopping element for any space. Its pattern shows irregular shapes that harmoniously combine to create new patterns and recall the images that can be admired through the kaleidoscope.
Our final transformation for the week at the Bossa Nova Mansion is the dining room.
For this design, we aimed to preserve most of the existing elements in the space while injecting new life into the room. Through carefully selected and curated lighting, as well as a reimagined integration with the kitchen, this dining room now appears more spacious and emanates a fresh and inviting atmosphere. The beautiful wood details that were already present have now been placed in the spotlight, creating a timeless classic.
Let’s continue with the transformation of the Bossa Nova Mansion master bedroom!
By introducing new bespoke joinery furniture that effortlessly blends style and functionality, and infusing vibrant colors that breathe new life into the space, we have begun to transform this bedroom into something new. The upgraded lighting scheme casts a warm and inviting ambiance, creating a cozy haven for guests. Existing artwork takes center stage, seamlessly integrated into the design to evoke a sense of familiarity and a personal touch.
The powder room was one of the most challenging and enjoyable transformations in the Bossa Nova project.
Previously dark and cluttered, we updated this powder room to a sleek and modern version. The innovative 3D wall cladding steals the spotlight, adding depth and visual interest that elevates the entire space. Improved lighting, new artwork, and a large mirror were also integral in making this space brighter and appear larger.
The guest bedroom at Bossa Nova Mansion also needed a transformation to provide new sensations for our clients’ guests.
Lighting and color can make or break a design, especially for this charming guest bedroom. Our team wanted to reflect the awe-inspiring and calming views that this room offers. By using soothing shades of green, this bedroom exudes a tranquil and breezy energy, inviting guests to relax in comfort and style.
Another week begins with yet another challenging transformation!
The Bossa Nova Mansion project was truly unforgettable. Once the residence of the iconic Brazilian singer Elis Regina, we were well aware that this design had to evoke incredible emotions and vibes for our clients. The mansion’s lounge required an update and a burst of vibrant colors to illuminate the room, so we ensured that it not only met but exceeded its full potential.
It’s time to meet the future with Maison&Objet 2024!
In 2024, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Maison&Objet, the fair will show its participants a revitalized future that combines technology and nature!
This season’s theme, TECH EDEN, will enliven the January edition with reinvented feature spaces oriented toward the retail, residential, or hospitality industries. Places where nature will be very much on hand, not necessarily in a literal sense, but sometimes digitally speaking and, to varying degrees, mineral, lush, and hybrid. It’s a mix of nature and technology that’s sure to re-energize the concept of sustainability and create a truly desirable vision of the future!
Say hello to a tropical dining room transformation!
When your client has a passion for entertaining and the Brazilian way of life, the project has to deliver. So, for the Rio Penthouse dining room, we searched and chose the best: Sérgio Rodrigues’ Burton dining table, inspired by aeroplane aerodynamics found at an antique store. The handmade tile mosaic, inspired by Athos Bulcao’s work, reflects Rio’s bossa nova easy-going, fun, and modernist style. The result? A colourful, tropical dining room perfect for hosting intimate gatherings and lively dinner parties!
Here’s another fun challenge from our Rio Penthouse project: the powder room.
Transforming a convenient powder room to look spacious and modern was no easy feat. With the perfect combination of grand mirrors, clever lighting, and beautiful colour tones, we were able to turn this space into a modern and relaxing room.
We at Casa Alta Design love to provide a Cinderella magical moment of transformation for our clients. The Rio Penthouse project gave a challenge to turn a cluttered and dark kitchen into a new space.
One of the most essential places in the house, we wanted this kitchen to be modern with the best appliance and storage solutions. One of the goals was to give life to this room and use all the space with the best flow possible.
There are days when all we want to do is sit down and enjoy a movie or a TV series in a cosy space. So you should have the best place for that in your home.
Another needed transformation in the Rio Penthouse project was the living room. Using the right colours and marvellous furniture, we could make this TV area stand out, giving all the cosiness and comfort for maximum enjoyment.
A new year begins, and we all start our new cycles. How about representing a new cycle with transformations and renovations in the new year?
Step in for our first transformation: the Rio Penthouse project. Look at these before & after pics at the lobby of the penthouse. What was once ordinary can become showstopping and alive with the right furniture, lighting and combinations.
Another year has passed, and a new year full of new opportunities and adventures has arrived. So, the Casa Alta Design team wants to make a toast.
We want to thank every client, follower, collaborator and supplier that is part – past and present – of Casa Alta Design’s history. Without this incredible and irreplaceable network of support and trust, we wouldn’t have the inspiration to improve our work and the unique and beautiful results we had this year and every year.
And we wish you the most joyful, beautiful and marvellous New Year!
The holidays have arrived with feelings of joy, love and hope!
It is the time for traditions and decking the halls. And we know that red, green, and gold are the timeless colours representing Christmas. But we encourage you to play and have fun decorating your home with your friends and loved ones, creating new traditions and making timeless memories to be cherished.
We at Casa Alta Design wish you the most joyful and merry Christmas and the happiest of holidays!

If you give new life and love to older chairs, they can transform into something fresh and beautiful in your home.
We love to reimagine and give a new meaning to pieces that our clients already have. So, for projects like Rio Mansion and Cascais Retreat, the Casa Alta Design team renovated these two chairs into a new essential piece of these homes’ design.
The Sugar Quay project was one of the most challenging and rewarding moments in Casa Alta Design’s history. We even were finalists at the International Design Awards with this stunning design.
And one of our proudest choices in Sugar Quay was using the Normal armchair from Giorgetti. This unique piece is shaped as beautiful as it is practical. The Normal armchair is a testament to comfort and strength.
Since the beginning of interior design and furnishing homes, people have been designing and choosing chairs for their houses. And over all these years, iconic chairs became part of design history and our lives.
Today, we celebrate and show you five timeless and inspiring chairs of design history: the Ming Chair, the Charles and Ray Eames Eames LCW Chair, the Louis XV Armchair, the Marcel Breuer Cesca Chair and the Bistro Chair.
Using Sergio Rodrigues pieces in our designs always makes us happy, just like the Diz armchair in Sugar Quay.
A classic of Sergio Rodrigues’ production, the Diz armchair was released in 2001. Light and extremely comfortable, thanks to its double curvature, it is made entirely of wood and available in different tones, in versions with or without the famous round holes that are the Rio designer’s trademark.
Chairs are essential in every project, so we present you Casa Alta Design’s Chair Week.
A modern twist on a classic design can change everything. The Spoutnik armchair was designed by Sacha Lakic and inspired by the 1950s. Its modest size allows it to fit perfectly in any interior space. This incredible piece by our friends at Roche Bobois was integral to our Anjos Apartment project.
Innovation and challenges can lead to a better future!
As the industry’s most respected event, Futurebuild provides the stage for inspiring ideas, innovative solutions and knowledge sharing to drive sustainable construction.
The exhibition brings together the entire supply chain to showcase, debate and understand the advancements in sustainable construction and the emerging technologies that will make net zero possible.
In certain instances, the challenge lies in the aspect of timing. In the context of this Lisbon Project, we were faced with the task of preparing everything for our client’s arrival in Portugal within a mere month’s time. Through our reliable network of suppliers, contractors, and efficient communication, as well as obtaining client approvals, Casa Alta Design invite you to witness this neat and remarkable project!
What do you do when your client is a mathematician and would like to make a subtle hommage to her profession? Casa Alta Design answered this unique brief by coding neutral colours and finished such as matt, textured and gloss with the Fibonacci Sequence, creating this amazing joinery full of character.
The time for cosying up around a fireplace has come! How about doing it in grand style?
Embrace the allure of candlelight romance with the T-Lite 8 Fireplace from EcoSmart Fire. This portable fireplace seamlessly merges into indoor and outdoor settings, creating an inviting and sophisticated atmosphere.
The most challenging designs can make a project stunning and unique.
There are times when a single challenge multiplies into various ones. For this project, we needed to combine several different materials overcrowded in a small corridor and design three different types of doors that looked the same when closed. And finally, we got a result that made us proud.
Welcome to Casa Alta Design’s Big & Unique Challenges Week!
We love it when a client comes to us with an unusual, sometimes a bit crazy 😉 idea. Something out of the ordinary, unique, and that needs to be approached with a lot of courage – from the clients for trusting us and from our team to make it happen. So here is a small collection of some of the bravest and most challenging projects we have designed.
Unique projects need unique solutions, just like our first project of the week. Sometimes the challenge can lie in the logistics of making dreams happen. With this gorgeously lit staircase designed by Casa Alta Design, we had to plan every single item to fit like a Lego and be small enough to fit into a small lift. Additionally, this 8-meter-long staircase Lego bit had to be all welded on site.
Kind + Jugend is THE international industry event of 2024!
As an established trade and trend platform for baby and toddler outfitting, the trade fair showcases high-quality and innovative products that will inspire parents with their unique diversity. The selection extends from baby and toddler clothing through toys and furniture to products revolving around the transport and safety of young ones.
Kids grow up, and their room also has to grow up!
We love a good challenge, and this project presented a fun one: a nursery needed to transform into something new and updated for our young client.
So here is a Casa Alta Design way to upgrade a nursery into a super functional and fun teen den with carefully planned bespoke joinery and fresh deco – Hello, Gen Z!
There is no better way than with the Montessori method to inspire your baby to develop their skills, grow and stimulate their senses.
In this project, we designed another Casa Alta Design Montessori-style nursery with a happy Scandi vibe for the little one to grow up and have fun in the best way possible.
How about giving your little one a bit of style and uniqueness?
Branch styled slats make Milk Street Baby’s Branch crib one of the most unique and stylish cribs out there. The exotic nature of the branch spindles creates a wondrous world of nature reflected in form and function.
We love white and blue palettes! These calming colours remind us of the sea and is a great choice for kids’ bedrooms and nurseries.
This classic contemporary bespoke nursery designed by Casa Alta Design for our Hampstead Project is a perfect example of how a neutral palette with pops of colour simply does magic!
The little ones deserve special attention to the interior design in their rooms!
Designing nurseries makes us think of spaces through different perspectives and makes us attentive to very particular needs, so today we proudly present Casa Alta Design’s Nursery Week. For our Rio Mansion project, we made a bespoke Montessori-style joinery with easy access for the little ones combined with a colourful and vibrant palette and easy access to all furniture with some fun touches like blackboards and lego-like furniture.
One of the best events for joinery and interior design solutions is coming! FIMMA + Maderalia is back. The great reunion for the sector with the help of the leading national and international firms in the wood-carpentry-decoration sector.
Joinery is always up for reinventing and creating something new and unique for your home.
Today’s joinery creations and furniture come with a contemporary twist – shapes or materials that keep the pieces edgy rather than old-fashioned. Our Rio Penthouse project featured this exclusive piece that made a difference in the space.
Bespoke joinery can be the perfect solution to make a project soar.
When dealing with small and unusual spaces, joinery is the way to go. Check out this neat closet we have designed for our Anjos project. This sophisticated and dynamic walk-in closet makes use of every corner in the space maximising storage and keeping a ergonomic flow.
Modular systems are an easy and practical way of giving a personal touch to joinery using pre-manufactured components. The Porada domino system offers a composition with shelves, chests of drawers and containers in various wood and metal finishes.
This moveable and automated joinery was designed by Casa Alta Design to control natural light and privacy as needed. The bespoke louvres were cladded in leather and fitted with a ball-bearing mechanism to ensure a smooth rotation.
Joinery is one of the most creative, dynamic, stylistic and fun solutions in interior design. So, to celebrate that, we begin Casa Alta Design’s Joinery Week!
Our first stop is the elegant and inventive bespoke joinery from Sugar Quay. This project required a more sophisticated design, so we combined luxurious materials with verde tinos marble, antique bronze trimmings and American walnut to deliver this incredible piece.
The Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan is the perfect place to find all the recent trends and exciting new ideas for dining rooms!

Art and dining rooms can go hand in hand.
In this project, we wanted to display the beautiful art and colours from Vanessa Barragão while also matching the overall design. With a mesmerizing dining table and comfortable and cosy chairs, we gave our clients a delicious and tasteful space for meals and conversations with friends and loved ones.
Playing with reflection is always a joy!
In our Lisbon Project, we designed a sophisticated dining room with all the visual interest, finesse and comfort. The showstopping dining table enhances every little detail of the space while being the centrefold for delicious lunches, snacks and dinners.
Rustic and elegant, Casa Alta Design’s Tatu table could be what you’re looking for in your dining room.

A home bar should have all the comfort, fun and ambience that outside bars have. For this project, we tackled the mission to deliver a delicious, intimate and elegant bar for our clients to have the most amazing moments with friends or take a drink to celebrate personal events.
Wine is one of the best drinks, perfect for almost any day or moment. So when our client asked for a wine bar in the project, we knew we had to make it unique. Our solution was a 100% bespoke wine bar with every detail thought out and matching the overall vibe of the whole project.
Sitting at the bar is essential and indispensable, so how about sitting in the incredible Ester Stools by our friends at Porada?
Contemporary and stylish, the Ester bar stools feature a solid curved canaletta walnut or ashwood backrest, available in a choice of stained or matt lacquered finishes. The swivelling metal base features a sleek black chromed finish and has a convenient oblong shaped footrest.
A bar has to be inviting, comfortable and fun. We had these goals in mind when designing Casa Alta Design’s Hotel da Terra project, but we wanted to give more spark in every little detail. With a more fluid and luxurious vibe, this bar is ready for intimate settings and for getting the party started.
Meeting with friends, happy hours, unwinding after a busy day, what do these things have in common? They can all happen in a bar! And we maintain that an eventful place like this has to be well designed. Today, we present Casa Alta Design’s Bar Week, starting with the fun, laid-back and elegant bar from our Hotel da Terra project.

It includes a bespoke dressing table and closet area, making it the perfect place to rest and get ready for the day.
Casa Alta Design has yet again proven its expertise by combining clean lines and bespoke joinery with a classic colour palette, with touches of fuchsia and pink tones infusing the room with timeless elegance.
The strategic use of light fixtures brings a warm and inviting ambience, perfect for relaxation.
Happy Homes – Casa Alta Design Tip 6 – Let there be light!
Lighting is another factor that affects your happiness and well-being. You want to have enough natural light in your home to boost your mood and energy levels. You can use sheer curtains, mirrors, or light colours to maximize the sunlight in your rooms. You also want to have some artificial lighting options for different times of the day and activities. You can use dimmers, lamps, or candles to create a warm and cosy atmosphere. Pendant lights over bedside tables are a great way to add touches of happiness and also free up space like in this special project designed by Casa Alta Design.
Happy Homes – Casa Alta Design Tip 5 – Create a cosy corner.
Sometimes you just need a place to relax and unwind after a long day. That’s why, if you have a little extra space, it is a good idea to create a cosy corner in your home where you can curl up with a good book or a soft blanket. You can use a comfortable chair, a sofa, or soft rugs, and add some pillows, cushions, or throws to make it extra cosy. And remember that little table for a good cup of tea and good lighting just like we have designed for this project in London.
Happy Homes – Casa Alta Design Tip 4 – Make it personal.
Your home should reflect who you are and what you love. Don’t be afraid to express yourself and show your personality through the interiors you inhabit. You can display some of your favourite photos, books, and artwork. To assist our clients in making considerate selections of artwork, our full turnkey services now include a special artwork consultation with the amazing talented Felix Kidd @kiddconsultancy curating bespoke solutions and sound artwork investments for our clients.
If you have been following our posts, you probably have heard us time and again beat our drum about the importance of adding nature to spaces and biophilic design. Well, guess what? Nature has a healing and relaxing effect on our minds and bodies and is perfect for creating happy homes. You can add some plants, flowers, or herbs to your rooms, or use natural materials like wood, stone, or bamboo.
Happy Homes – Casa Alta Design Tip 2 – Colour matters.
The colours you choose for your walls, furniture, and accessories can have a big impact on your mood. Different colours evoke different emotions, so choose wisely. For example, blue is calming, yellow is energizing, and green is soothing. Experiment with different shades and combinations to find what works best for you.
Are you looking for ways to create a home that increases your happiness? If so, you’re not alone. Many people want to live in a space that reflects their personality, values, and goals. But how do you achieve that? Here we break down Casa Alta Design’s approach to generating Happiness in Interiors.
Happiness starts with decluttering and organising. You’ll be amazed at how much more spacious and peaceful your home will feel after a good purge of items that you do not need or organising the things you love. To achieve this, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to get rid of most of your possessions – “Marie Kondo it” and if it makes you happy then keep it. By carefully analysing our clients’ beloved items and designing adequate bespoke storage for them, we make sure that not only everything has its own place but also makes them accessible according to need and frequency of usage.
Selling your Home – Casa Alta Design Tip 6 – Finally, one of the best ways to increase your resale value is to update your kitchen and bathroom. These are the two rooms that buyers pay the most attention to when looking for a home. You can make some minor or major changes depending on your budget and preference. For example, you can replace your faucets, knobs, handles, or lighting fixtures with more modern and sleek ones. You can also repaint your cabinets, countertops, or tiles with more durable and attractive colours or add new bar stools.
Selling your Home – Casa Alta Design Tip 5 – Lighting is another important factor that can affect the mood and appearance of your home. You can use natural light, artificial light, or a combination of both to create different effects and ambiences. For example, adding LED strips to shelves (there are several battery-operated ones available if you don’t have a socket nearby) and beautiful table lamps are simple and inexpensive hacks that can make a real difference.
Selling your Home – Casa Alta Design Tip 4 – Hire a professional interior designer. If you want to take your home to the next level and maximise profits, you might want to consider hiring a professional interior designer. A designer can help you plan, execute and style your space according to your goals, budget and preferences. At Casa Alta Design, we offer a range of services, from consultations and mood boards to full-scale renovations and staging. Contact us today for a free quote and let us help you maximise your resale value with interior design.
Selling your Home – Casa Alta Design Tip 3 – Declutter and organise your space. A cluttered or crowded home can deter potential buyers from seeing the true value of your property. You want to highlight the best aspects of your space, not cover them with unnecessary items. Before showing your home, remove any excess or unwanted belongings, and arrange the remaining ones in a neat and orderly way. You can also use storage solutions such as baskets, bins and shelves to keep things organised and out of sight. Pay special attention to bathrooms, making sure they are tidy, spotless and fresh-smelling. Leave only a few attractive items on display, and store away any personal or hygiene products. Nobody wants to see other people’s toothbrushes or intimate items!
Trying to sell your home? Follow Casa Alta Design tips this week. Tip 2 – Invest in quality furniture and accessories. Concentrate on investing in a few key items and avoid spending money on lots of items that can drag down the overall look of your home. Instead, opt for pieces that are durable, stylish and versatile. You can add some personality and flair with carefully chosen accessories, such as mirrors, rugs, lamps and artwork. For this brand-new project by Casa Alta Design, we specified this solid framed mirror by @cattelanitalia and an elegantly slender floor lamp by @vibialight
Are you thinking of selling your home in the near future? If so, you might want to consider how interior design can help you maximise your resale value. At Casa Alta Design, we have the expertise and experience to transform your space into a buyer’s dream. This week we will give you some tips from our team on how to make your home more appealing and profitable.
We start the week with a basic tip with a twist about the colour palette. Choose a neutral and timeless colour palette however, have key items which will make your home stand out from the rest. You want to create a sense of harmony and elegance in your home, not overwhelm potential buyers with bold or trendy colours but use accessories and textures to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. A neutral colour scheme combined with a balanced and discreet colour palette will also make your rooms look more spacious and bright, which are key factors for buyers.
Casa Alta Design moodboard of the week! A biophilic delight to give your day a natural and refreshing breeze.
Do you want to make your boardroom more inspiring, engaging, and productive? Here are some tips on how to create a biophilic boardroom that will impress your clients and colleagues:
Use natural materials such as wood, stone, or metal for your furniture, flooring, and walls. These materials can create a warm, cozy, and inviting atmosphere that makes you feel closer to nature.
Add plants and flowers to your boardroom, either in pots, vases, or hanging from ceilings. Plants can purify the air, reduce stress, and enhance concentration. You can also use artificial plants if you can’t to maintain them.
Incorporate natural light and ventilation into your boardroom, either by using large windows, skylights, or fans. Natural light and ventilation can improve your mood, energy, and alertness. You can also use artificial lighting that mimics the natural daylight cycle.
Use natural colours and patterns for your boardroom, either by painting the walls, using wallpaper, or adding accessories. Natural colours and patterns can stimulate your senses, evoke positive emotions, and create a sense of harmony. You can also use colours that match your brand identity or theme.
Add natural sounds and smells to your boardroom, either by using speakers, diffusers, or candles. Natural sounds and smells can relax your mind, body, and soul. You can also use sounds and smells that suit your purpose or occasion.

Inspired by Casa Alta Design´s Biophilic Week? Then here is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the plant and design world – Don´t miss Biophilia Camp 2023, which is an immersive, four-day workshop to learn and apply the biophilic design principles of beautiful spaces that improve human well-being and environmental sustainability. The camp serves as a dynamic platform for architects, designers, sustainability consultants, project managers, researchers, technicians of manufacturing companies, and visionaries to explore the transformative potential of biophilic design. The camp will take place from Monday 25 September 2023 to Thursday 28 September 2023 in Italy.
Planning to create a home that is not only beautiful, but also healthy, sustainable, and harmonious? Then you need to consider biophilic design, which is the art and science of integrating nature into your living spaces. Biophilic design can help you improve your mood, energy, and wellbeing by connecting you with the natural elements that you love. Whether it’s plants, flowers, water, light, or colours, biophilic design can help you bring the outdoors in and create a space that reflects your personality and values. Look at this amazing example of a biophilic design by Casa Alta Design, where the outdoor living and dining areas were integrated into the garden.
We love this clever and organic combination of a vase and a lamp that creates a symbiotic relationship between plants and light. The vase holds water and flowers, while the lamp provides illumination and warmth. The water evaporates and condenses on the lamp, creating a natural cycle of hydration and cooling.
Biophilic design can help boost mood, productivity, and creativity at the office by connecting you with the natural world. Check out this amazing example of a biophilic design for Rock Capital created by Casa Alta Design with lots of plants welcoming staff and clients right at their reception area. Reduce stress with plants!

Gone are the days when the outdoor space was separate from the rest of the house.
Your outdoor space doesn’t need to look unrelated to the interior of your home. Matching the overall style of the house, you can bring some indoor elements outdoors, creating a clear visual connection between the spaces. We did just that in our latest Portugal project, and of course, we added these lovely pergolas to give that elegant and cosy vibe.
The weather is a decisive factor when designing an outdoor space.
Every detail counts when we design a space, but predicting what the weather will do is essential. Rain, wind, sun, and more can fade wood and discolour fabrics over time, but that doesn’t mean always having to buy new outdoor furniture every two years. We tackled this challenge by putting the right pieces outside, just like we did with the gorgeous furniture in our Rio Penthouse project.
Our Sugar Quay project was recently featured in the amazing Design Centre London website.
Check it out!
How do you want your outdoor space to be?
One of the main things when designing an outdoor space is to know its purpose and what activities will happen there. After deciding how to use this outdoor space, we fill it with comfortable and stunning furniture and decor to match all the vibes. For our Rio Mansion project, we designed a chill blue seating area for summer readings, entertainment and refreshing.
Enjoying the outdoors is a must to relax and unwind.
Beautiful outdoor living spaces can be some of the most chill areas of your home. Who doesn’t adore lovely dining set-ups and sun-soaked seating arrangements? But to have a cohesive, gorgeous outdoor space can also be a challenge, mainly because the rules of indoor design don’t always apply outdoors.
How do you want the look and feel of your house to be?
Accessories are an endless source of beauty, interaction, usability and creativity. By placing the accessories that echo the overall plan of an interior design, you can have the room of your dreams with every detail that works and give sparks every time you look at them. Look at how we transformed the living room in our Bella Vista project with accessories reflecting the client’s contemporary art collection.
We at Casa Alta Design take accessorizing seriously.
The connection between accessories and lighting is fundamental because even the tiniest detail can influence the mood and composition of the room. The right accessories can ensure the space is harmonious, elegant, fun and even bigger than it is. With that task in mind, we designed a sophisticated bespoke shelving unit where stone, wood, bronze metal and lighting interact with accessories, creating a seamless integration into the scheme.
We have another hot tip about accessorizing.
Usability is essential when deciding on accessories. The chosen pieces should deliver not only beauty and aesthetics but also interaction and usability in the room. As we know, a great design goes well with the client’s needs, so any product must be easy to use and work with its surroundings.
Accessorizing is always a fun task when you know what to do.
The first step in choosing the accessories in a space is to be very clear about the overall style of the project. Setting the mood and vibes takes you in the right direction on the journey of selecting the brands and pieces that match the room and, of course, bring the wow factor.
What makes a guest bedroom practical and ideal?
The guest bedroom has to meet all the needs of the person staying in the room, while still providing a safe, relaxing and beautiful space. So, planning an ergonomic space to place a suitcase is recommended. If space allows, plan a cool workspace corner. And never forget to help your guests stay connected by checking if the wi-fi signal and password are available in the room.
Privacy and comfort go hand in hand.
To succeed in designing a guest bedroom, you have to consider the privacy that the room offers. While the right decor and furniture are more than essential, solid doors, blackout and sheer curtains and wall insulation can work wonders for a room. In our Bella Vista project, we created this cosy and relaxing space for guests and of course, with beautiful artwork as well.
How about adding a touch of local culture and exciting artwork to the guest bedroom?
When staying in a guest bedroom, we want to feel safe and comfortable like we truly belong in that space. With that in mind, our Rio Penthouse project allowed us to tackle this challenge. With delicious bedding, furniture and local artwork by @marcelolamarca , we transformed this space into a cosy bedroom for our client’s guests.
Is your home ready for guests?
We at Casa Alta Design love designing guest bedrooms and, of course, we have some tips. First and foremost, a comfortable and beautiful bed & bedding is fundamental. The guest bedroom is the place to feel relaxed and captivated by the decor and furniture.
For this gorgeous Casa Alta Design project we have specified luxurious bedding from the amazing @lamaisonpierrefrey
Today we start our Guest Room special week!

The right bathtub is essential in a home spa bathroom.
Relaxing in a bathtub can restore all our energies and give us a moment to take care of ourselves. In our Sugar Quay project, we had the joy of using the clear and purist design of the PURO DUO bath by @kaldewei. This beautiful bath fulfils the desire for high-quality and timeless design for bathing comfort for two.
The mood in a home spa can change everything. And our latest Casa Alta Design home spa project does just that.
An interior design scheme for a home spa has to encapsulate all of the relaxing characteristics and vibes to ensure that you can relax and have a good time. In our latest project, we had the challenge of creating a place of relaxation, great massages and wellness. For that, we chose the right colours, the ideal lighting and a connection to nature through delicious greenery.
To have a delicious home spa you have to check a few boxes.
A beautiful home spa scheme has to be created considering ambient lighting, durable yet impactful finishes and exquisite detailing. And of course, a theme to tie all the vibes and characteristics to give that showstopping factor.
The wellness trend is always on the rise, especially in times when we need to take a step back and relax.
A home spa is a perfect place to relax and start a journey of self-care in the privacy and comfort of your own house. With the right furniture and colours, you can transform your bathroom into a beautiful and chill haven.
Black and white bathrooms are a classic choice for a reason.
Besides never going out of style, black-and-white has other benefits besides giving that deliciously elegant vibe. The white colour makes the space look clean and fresh, while black offers rich contrast and depth, making the room look bigger. The latter was just the case for our recent Lisbon project, it doesn’t look small now, does it?
A small balcony was no problem for Casa Alta Design.
Balconies are perfect places to read a good book and have a good old cup of coffee in the mornings or cocktails at night. But even if your balcony is tiny, you can still have fun with a more optimized space. For this project, we carefully chose the furniture that didn’t make the space feel small. And we added greenery to ensure the more relaxing vibes.
Who wouldn’t love a bedroom with a unique, tailor-made space?!
And we just can’t get enough of using beautiful bespoke joinery for our projects. Joinery makes it possible to create unique wall finishes like this headboard panel mosaic wood panelling and leather that we designed for our Sugar Quay project.
An eclectic bedroom embodies so many different and exciting things!
The eclectic style takes on a wide variety of eras, styles, and colours. For example, you can use a wide variety of textures, fabrics and furniture pieces and tie all that with a single colour that serves as the unifying factor and brings the whole interior together.
Colours can truly transform a room!
When choosing colours for a bedroom, essential factors are key: personal taste, mood, style and the overall project vibe. For example, for this charming bedroom in our Rio Mansion project, we chose green for its calming and invigorating qualities, a dash of red to make it sophisticated and white and blue to complete the relaxing energy a bedroom should have.
A clean, uncluttered space is the best to unwind and relax!
A minimalist bedroom focuses on function and uses the concept of less is more. It’s very usual to see neutral colours in these spaces, but adding punches of bright or deep colour to the palette can be unique and fun.
Finally, we finish our special week talking about the fine and showstopping work of Ferreira da Silva.
Born in Porto, Ferreira da Silva studied ceramic art in Bombarral, Alcobaça and Paris chasing the best techniques and the best clay for his work. Ferreira’s unique pieces are widely celebrated and exhibited in many museums. And we at Casa Alta Design love and cherish this icon!
We just love how authentic, beautiful and mesmerizing @vistaalegreofficial museum and ceramic factory is!
Vista Alegre is a worldwide known Portuguese brand that is celebrated for its elegant and unique porcelain. Founded in 1824, it’s the oldest ceramics factory in the Iberian Peninsula. There you can find an amazing museum and you can also shop for the most beautiful pieces.
We can’t have a Portuguese Ceramic Week without talking about @bordallopinheiroofficial!
This unique brand plays an essential role in the revitalization of Portuguese ceramics and the artistic heritage of its factory. They remain faithful to tradition through the use of ancestral manufacturing techniques and the naturalistic motifs at the root of the brand’s great project. And we adore all their pieces!
It’s Portuguese Ceramic Week at Casa Alta Design!
So we start with the amazing vernacular, traditional and rustic ceramics at Corval, Évora. There we can find real and beautiful art in all forms: pieces or decoration. It’s all made with ancient, regional and shared knowledge and techniques. Corval is, by excellence, one of the biggest ceramic centres in the whole country.
Our final pick for this inspired week is the innovative Personal Line by @technogym
Alongside state-of-the-art biomechanics and digital technologies, Personal Line home fitness equipment is envisioned with the most luxurious materials and top-level craftsmanship in mind, conceived to be both goal-training equipment and a piece of art.
We love the work that @antoniolupidesign displayed at Milan Design Week!
antoniolupi is an amazing Tuscan company that for more than seventy years has distinguished itself in the Italian and international markets for its bathroom furnishings projects. And we love how their product line now embraces the entire living space with collaborations by talented and established designers.
Our second top pick from Salone del Mobile is the showstopping Luna Mirrors by the amazing @wewoodportuguesejoinery
Designed by Eleonora Fedi, this series of mirrors were inspired by the beautiful and fascinating shape of the full and crescent moon. Handcrafted with the most traditional Portuguese joinery techniques, they are ideal to create a beautiful wall décor
Last week’s Milan Design Week was filled with stunning trends and beautiful pieces! We start our special week with Casa Alta Design’s top picks of the event.
A @alotofbrasil is a Brazilian company founded in 2012 by designer Pedro Franco, its values are based on the concept of Glocalidade (global+local). For 2022’s Salone del Milano, Pedro presented a new collection named Kintsugi, inspired by the Eastern technique of the same name inscribed in the Wabi Sabi philosophy.
Colours can make a statement and also set the mood in a space!
The colour choice in a meeting room is crucial to give the right energy to all participants. You can’t have inspiration in a sterile and uncomfortable room. For the @globalcitizensolutions meeting room, we went with primarily blue and green. Light blue to give comforting vibes and encourage new ideas and potential. And green is present in the biophilic design to give an energy boost.
Fundamental decisions are made in meeting rooms and in many occasions this area could be the only one that a visiting client, supplier or professional ever comes across your branding identity.
The meeting room in our @globalcitizensolutions project had to reflect the goals of the project: a contemporary and reassuring company identity. To achieve the balance between making the space less corporate but at the same time to translate the high standards that the company treats every client and project, we specially created a scheme that is comforting and streamlined using neutral colours and luxurious materials.
Disrupting and innovative CEOs deserve offices that translate not only their corporate identity but also key elements of their personalities that are fundamental to their clientele and corporate environment.
For @pati.gb, the ground-breaking, young and elegant CEO @globalcitizensolutions, we have designed a space with sharp, cool vibes with a tailored ambience that is refreshingly reassuring and affirmative.
For this scheme we wanted to go beyond that idea of a formal seat in front of a CEO’s desk and created a living room atmosphere, making meetings more productive and less unnecessarily formal.
Office design is directly connected to productivity and wellbeing at work. When designing a workplace, we have to make the best use of space through solutions that accommodate the furniture layout, ergonomics, ventilation and lighting in a room. It is also important that teams have a sense of privacy but are able to interact when needed. For this trapezoidal office, we used the empty space in the middle of the room to create a workspace island where collaborators have their own space but are also at easy to interact and move around.
Meeting room design is an essential part of designing an office space!
Meeting rooms ambience need to provide comfortable and private settings which makes focusing easier but at the same time does not box in its participants. So that means that the interior design has to get the format and features just right. It also has to reflect the brand identity and characteristics. Just like we did in the Rock Capital office, by also making this meeting room beautiful and functional.
Does your office reflect your company identity?
Designing office interiors is more than making them look good and functional. By aligning the interior design with your brand’s uniqueness, culture and vision, you get a space that truly makes a statement among your employees, clients and the market.
That was the main mission of our Rock Capital project. Check it out!
Natural surfaces match well with a stunning biophilic design!
We were all about cool and smart vibes when designing the Rock Capital office in Lisbon. To achieve our design goals, we used these beautiful cork decorative panels from @muratto.wall . Fun fact: they also help with videoconferences because of the acoustic characteristics of the material.
Biophilic interior design is the way to reconnect with the natural world.
We love using biophilic design principles to create calming environments with natural lighting and ventilation, incorporating plants and strengthening a visual connection with nature.
Imagine working in a place with that exact vibe? That’s what we did in our brand new office project for Rock Capital. A contemporary and irreverent scheme for decisive board meetings.
Kitchen design is serious business at Casa Alta Design!
We absolutely adore designing the ideal kitchens for all our clients. In our Estoril project, we got to design a clean and minimalist kitchen offering endless possibilities for ergonomic and delicious meal prepping.
Design de cozinha é assunto sério na Casa Alta Design!
Some times us designers have to step back and just let nature become the perfect backdrop.
For this minimalist and effective outdoor scheme, we have done just that. By using nature as a living wallpaper, we have created a charming setting for this casual outdoor seating area, perfect to enjoy lazy afternoons and the breeze from the Atlantic sea. Let your hair down and take your shoes off and feel the grass underneath… it’s time to let go.
The leaf motifs used for the wallpaper and artwork in this bedroom echo the luscious nature just outside this lateral apartment with great views over Estoril.
This symmetric scheme portrays a feeling of stability, calmness, and balance assisted by a gentle layering of natural fabrics and materials such as wool, ceramic, wood and Egyptian cotton.
Time to show a little more of our Bella Vista Estoril project!
The focus for this bedroom scheme was to work with a neutral base palette with splashes of aubergine, giving the clients flexibility to add or change the colour scheme in the future. This ample bedroom benefits from having a reading corner and a dressing area and also using natural and traditional Portuguese weaved fabrics.
Do you know that a large living room needs focal points?
When you have a large space, you need an eye-catching point that really makes the room stand out. In our Bella Vista project, we have a stunning fireplace wall with shelves filled with cool accessories that reflect the identity of the project.
Take a look!
A breakfast bar can be just the solution to divide the kitchen from the living room.
Bespoke joinery is a big part of Casa Alta’s Designs, so of course, we were keen to use our expertise in our latest Estoril project. Designed in american walnut, this useful breakfast bar doubles up as a high table for meals , drinks, informal work station as well as a great piece of decoration.
For our Estoril project, we planned a contemporary design with unique details and accessories but also a functioning space to gather friends and family. By using a layered sequence of materials such as matte lacquer, wood and the gorgeous grey ravina Portuguese marble, we created a laid back yet luxurious setting for happy get togethers.right vibe for our clients to feel calm and truly comfortable in this space.
It’s time to reveal our stunning Bella Vista Estoril project!
For the next couple of weeks, we’re taking you on a little tour with some pics of this new and exciting project. First stop: we have the elegant and spacious living room graced by the client’s eclectic contemporary art collection.
The kitchen usually is one of the most used spaces in the home, isn’t it?!
But if you have to bend your back every time you do some cooking, baking or washing up, you can suffer from annoying pains in your neck, shoulders or back area. But there’s an ideal solution: an ergonomically designed kitchen can make you adopt a correct posture.
Designing kitchens is a joy here at Casa Alta Design! We love to make them ergonomically exclusive for our clients just as we did in our Sugar Quay project.
Ergonomical design was an essential part while designing our Rio Mansion project where we re-planned existing and new furniture pieces to maximise flow, ventilation, lighting and aesthetics in the space.
It is known that open living spaces need to create continuity in home design. Living room furniture, dining furniture, and kitchen design should succeed in ergonomic factors such as having a flowing layout and being practical and convenient.
Using ergonomics in interior design means having to consider factors such as light sources, air and temperature.
Having a great window as a light source is always recommended in a home office space, as we did in our Sugar Quay project. We also recommend having a wider view, the right airflow, and temperature in the room, these factors improve the overall performance, concentration and well-being.
Ergonomics is essential part of interior design and a main focus of Casa Alta Design’s projects.
Did you know ergonomic interior design is not only about posture while sitting?
An ergonomically designed space has to be easy to approach, comfortable and promote general wellbeing. While aesthetics are fundamental in spaces we design, a balance between beauty, efficiency, and functionality is always researched by our team.
The natural fibre trend is here to stay!
Natural fibre furniture is becoming an essential interior design trend for its comfortable, natural and rustic characteristics. But beautiful aesthetics isn’t the only reason why this trend is popular.
The natural fibre items are super durable, lightweight, low maintenance and doesn’t cost much.
Take a look of when we used natural fibre in our Casa Patacho project!
Have you ever heard about cobogó?
Cobogó are hollow ceramic blocks often used in buildings across Brazil as ventilation bricks. Their origin is in the same country in the 1930s and became known for their use by architects including Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer.
Initially crafted only from cement, now you can find these marvellous blocks in new materials like glass, clay and ceramic as cobogó becomes an increasingly trendy choice of building material.
We adore using cobogó like in our amazing project Casa Patacho!
Cork is on the rise!
This material is now a showstopping interior design element. It went from being used in the wine industry as bottle-stoppers to the walls, ceilings and floors in the most beautiful homes.
Besides its elastic, cellular structure, thermal-regulating, soundproofing qualities and natural resistance to fire, what makes cork really stand out is its natural warm hue and subtly dappled texture which is the secret to its modern design success.
Organic, biodegradable, reusable and highly fashionable, Naifactory Lab’s Re Olivar offers new possibilities for repurposing.
The Re Olivar products use the basic mixture of ground olive stone with other natural ingredients, forming a grand variety of textures and appearances, depending on the amount and type of stone material used. The material can appear wood-like to transparent and is very malleable. And we just love how these products can be melted and reused again for the same or a different purpose with virtually no loss of material.
Sergio Rodrigues translates the Brazilian soul into furniture, with a humorous and relaxed feel. To this day, his timeless work is still alive and well and available for everyone who shares his vision and values.
Sergio’s chairs are a delight and have a unique beauty. We had the honour of using some iconic DIZ chair in our Sugar Quay project.
Chairs are game-changers in making sure your family and guests are comfortable. At the same time, they can set the tone of the space where they are.
So how to pick the right chairs?
The first step is to take a nice look at the room or space in which you are going to place these chairs. You need to measure all the vital points to know the exact dimensions.
And of course, you have to choose the material and frame of the chairs so they can match with the overall decor of the area.
When choosing the perfect outdoor chair it’s important to consider several factors, such as functionality, comfort, and materials, in addition to basics like cost and size. Most importantly, consider the local weather factors. Is your weather hot and dry, or do you live near the coast? Does it rain often? Does the midday sun beat down on your outdoor space? Wooden frame chairs with upholstered seats and backs are a great choice for outdoor spaces under a roof.

Porcelain is a type of ceramic tile that is stronger, harder, and even more water-resistant than ordinary ceramics. Porcelain tile are made of clays with finer particles fired at a higher temperature creating a harder, less porous surface. Easy to maintain and very flexible when it comes to pattern and colour choices, good quality porcelain tiles can achieve great performance in terms of durability, low maintenance and a seamless look when used in large scale formats.
When selecting flooring, a little homework and planning go a long way!
We have to consider the style of the house, the look, the durability of the material and the feel we want to create, but the most urgent factor is the ideal flooring for the room.
For a bedroom, a floor that can create warmth, relaxing vibes and beauty is the goal, since it’s a very intimate and well-lived space. Illustrating this point, we have the bedroom in our Lisbon Penthouse project with beautiful stained solid pine flooring.
Are you looking for new flooring materials with exciting looks and has multiple benefits? Here are some of our favourites…
Poured resin: This type of flooring is great for its non-slip surface and seamless joint free surfaces. Ideal for the kitchens, open plan spaces, indoor gym or play area.
Parquet: A timeless flooring great for adding a bit of formality and warmth to spaces, with wood pieces arranged in a mosaic patterns. Look out for large scale parquet for a more contemporary feel.
Terrazzo: A dazzling flooring made of natural stone chips and resin that works well indoors and outdoors. A truly versatile flooring, works well in residential and commercial settings as well as indoors and outdoors.
Cork: The best for quiet areas! This flooring is sustainable, sound-blocking, waterproof and fire-resistant… sounds amazing? Well, it is! Cork is undergoing a massive rethink, with new contemporary designs and colours, thanks to its revival in the Iberian Peninsula specially in Portugal.
Let’s talk about the latest flooring trends in interior design?!
When chosen with care, the ideal flooring options will set the stage for many years of style, personality, durability and comfort. We like the low maintenance and patterns created by hard floors: think engineered wood parquet, polished concrete, stone tiles or a funky combination between two floor types to jazz up that otherwise minimalist interior.
The Casa Alta Design 8th anniversary celebration wouldn’t be complete without our beloved Sugar Quay project.
Award finalist in 4 categories at @design.et.al International Interior Design Awards, our Sugar Quay project set even higher standards at Casa Alta Design.
The apartment, with its sweeping views of the Thames, was a blank canvas waiting for a Casa Alta Design transformation. We wanted to create a design that reflected the client’s identity, tastes and needs, infusing it with a refined welcoming ambience. We also take this opportunity to thank the amazing teams @gayshaltd @gscontracts @chartwellgroup for making this amazing project happen just how we planned, even though we had Covid related lockdowns and new Brexit rules throughout construction.
To keep the 8th-anniversary party going, let’s remember our very first Lisbon project!
The Lisbon Penthouse project was carefully designed for our dear first ever London clients @pati.gb & family, who decided to create a second nest in Lisbon. This is a daring design where flexibility ruled. Originally designed to serve as two independent holiday penthouses, these two adjacent apartments became a large four-bedroom family home. To make this design scheme fun and contemporary, we used gorgeous bespoke joinery, furnishings and decoration.
To continue the celebration of our 8th anniversary, we shine a light on our first full turnkey Rio de Janeiro project!
This one is super special since it was designed for the amazing @aartiwaghela who became a dear friend. It was a fun yet sophisticated scheme inspired by Brazilian modernism. The scheme featured refreshing tropical touches in a lateral penthouse with a wide floor span and amazing views of Rio’s beloved landmark Christ the Redeemer.
Our 8th anniversary is coming up. So, it’s time to reminisce about iconic projects and clients in our history!
To start our trip down memory lane, we have our beloved Alto do Tatu project: a contemporary design scheme, yet rustic and simple. The architecture was beautifully planned by our long-standing friends @z_arquitetura and a carefully curated collection of the most exquisite Northeastern designs from @tocadotatuloja, creating laid back interiors full of charm and local culture.
Fun fact: it was also where we got the idea for the name Casa Alta Design!
Casa Alta Design loves designing open-plan spaces.
The living room of our Lisbon Penthouse project was an unique challenge as it had two interconnected apartments that can be used as two separate units or as a larger single one. To create this flexibility, we designed the secondary kitchen flowing from the TV unit and integrating contemporary furniture pieces.
In this project, we designed a living room with neutral and relaxing colours taking into consideration some existing statement pieces to give that elegant edge and touch to the space. The idea to this scheme was to create a flexible space for a family which loves to entertain guests and enjoy a fluid lifestyle with lots of friends, good wine, food and music.
A living room isn’t just to watch TV or relax after a stressful day! It is also a place to make a statement and mesmerize your visitors.
But we know the sofa will always dominate any living room, in the same way that the bed is the lead of a bedroom design story. Even the floor-hugging unassuming sofa design in this space is still the piece that sets the tone.
What is your ideal living room?
A living room can be a sacred space to relax, entertain, live the best moments and many more things. To honour that, the design of this space has to represent your personality and the importance of the room.
This beautiful living room uses a colour plan with a sophisticated neutral base, a colourful rug, cushions and accent furniture.
What do you think?
To finish our Maison&Objet thematic week, we have a delicious final treat for you.
As you know, we love playing with colours and adding them to our designs. So, of course, the dreamy Fragmented Concept wallpaper by Houseframe caught our eye.
Take a look at how the colours and shapes make a statement in this beautiful piece!
Today we have another highlight from Maison&Objet Paris!
The Mira side table by Maison Dada pays tribute to the famous Spanish painter and sculptor Miró, known for the eccentricity and humour of his work, with its offbeat shapes and strange geometric structures.
These side tables display a beautiful colour palette inspired by Miró’s brush.
One of the Maison&Objet’s highlights was the So home hôtel exhibition!
Imagine hotel-style luxury at your own home! That was the goal of the So home hôtel exhibition by Goodmoods.
All the products displayed were part of an amazing story of a truly unique mansion illustrating an underlying trend affecting the world of luxury, like the mesmerizing ART 77.5 Armchair by Noma Editions.
It was finally time to reconnect at Maison&Objet Paris 2022!
Much more than just a fair, this event is the place to share unique experiences. This years’ program had the theme New Luxury, with marvellous discoveries and connections.

Sophisticated simplicity and modern elegance are the hallmarks of the Casamance brand!
Seen on this years’ London Design Week, Casamance created and displayed new and mesmerizing fabric for curtains. Titled ‘Fascination’, it has oversized geometric patterns, some of which are over-embroidered with a multitude of yarns and stitches.

Can we just say how much we LOVED this years’ London Design Week?!
The event was a remarkable celebration, unseen anywhere else, of the spring/summer 2022 launches and a source of inspiration, knowledge and specialist expertise. We were able to take a voyage of discovery around the showrooms and Design Avenue and connect with an expanding creative community. And of course, we could meet world-class talent gathering together and share our stories and design vision.

What makes the perfect reading corner?
A reading nook should be a place where you can sit and take a breath. It has to be comfortable and full of your own personality to get lost in a new world or just leave the real one for a bit. To give that necessary spot to our Sugar Quay clients, we designed a delicious corner in the master bedroom with a soft armchair and an incredible view.
The perfect reading spot for you to relax and lose yourself in a new story is not easy to find.
And for the perfect reading corner, you need an equally perfect reading chair. Our tip is the beautiful and comfortable Loretta by Porada. It is an incredible armchair with a frame in solid ash and cover in the fabric of the collection.
Nowadays, we can live busy and chaotic lives between work and social engagements.
But what if you had a space in your home for relaxing and chill activities? We’re talking about reading that delicious novel, working through a stack of magazines or even putting on a mud mask and meditating.
For that, you need a great reading corner that gives you all the comfort, focus and calm vibe that you need.

Imagine you and your friends or loved ones around a fire telling stories and sharing beautiful moments. Adding a fire pit can provide that while also being an attractive focal point on the outside of your house.
A fire pit corner provides warmth and light for your outdoor space when socialising. And with the right choices, it can be a stunning plus to your home’s overall design scheme.
An external fire pit maximizes your outdoor experience providing a natural gathering and relaxing place after the sun sets and the temperatures drop.
It’s known that the ambience and cosiness of a crackling fire can warm you up physically and emotionally. So to give that delicious feeling to our clients at Cascais’ project, we designed the perfect spot for them to relax and warm up in the colder days.
The Ak47 design outdoor fire pits excel at their adaptability to different contexts and layouts!
These stunning fire pits enrich spaces in an osmotic relationship of values and utility. The whole collection is completely empathetic to the environment and, they adapt, defying the logic of the pre-existing scheme.

Time for you to discover an incredible place to go!
More than a hotel, L’AND Vineyards is an exclusive retreat, with 30 suites and villas that blends modern architecture with nature, providing an atmosphere of sober luxury, natural beauty and tranquillity.
It is set in the heart of Alentejo, in a unique landscape with Márcio Kogan’s interiors, Promontório’s architecture and Michael Biberstein’s artwork. At L’AND Vineyards resort you can make a gastronomic trip in the restaurant, renew in the Vinotherapie spa and sleep under the stars among the vineyards in one of the sky suites.
An underground windowless place could be the perfect locale to convert into a wine cellar!
You can use a wine cellar cooler and the ideal elements to maintain the ideal temperature and settings to store your wine collection. And just like that, you can turn a once bland space into a fantastical stop to appreciate delicious wines. And in our latest project, we took extra steps to make this room phenomenal by adding nice lighting and a cosy underground bar vibe.
To create a wine cellar numerous decisions are needed. The most important one is what materials to use.
Start by picking a type of wood that resists cold and damp areas (pine, fiberboard, MDF) to use in cabinets, wine racks and more. Cellars can incorporate granite or other types of stone for walls. To control the climate in a wine cellar, a cooling system is essential for keeping the temperature ideal for the bottles. You’ll also need an exterior grade door to maintain the conditions. And finally, almost any material can be used for the flooring in a wine cellar, except carpet, which is not a good flooring material for cold, damp areas.
A diverse and delicious wine collection deserves love and a proper wine cellar.
A wine cellar should have climate-controlled facilities to keep your collection at its peak. If you store your precious bottles inappropriately, you can ruin their taste and your investment.
Today we have some tips to design the best wine cellar possible:
Design for outdoor living space has changed for the better. These were once just spaces to place a patio furniture set and maybe a grill but with the increasing demand for better connections with nature, these outdoors space have gained a new importance and meaning. Fulfilling a request by the clients, we designed this resting corner at Casa dos Jasmins planned to allow the clients to enjoy the garden even on cold nights.
How about experiencing outdoor cooking and entertaining at its finest?!
The best way to enjoy the warm weather is to spend it outside. So for that, you can invest in outdoor spaces like an outside gourmet kitchen with a living space attached. In our Casa dos Jasmins project, we were all into using this concept and integrating relaxed, fun and elegant vibes. One big element of this design scheme was using pergolas to give that lovely charm to this outdoor space.
Check it out!
A Spanish architect based in Milan, Patricia Urquiola stands out for the original designs of objects and furniture that she produces for the best and most important international firms, like Kettal. Designing some of the most emblematic pieces in Kettal’s collection, she has won various accolades for her mesmerizing work. Of course, we had to use some of her beautiful creations in outdoor furniture for our latest project.
This week we are proud to present a preview of our latest project – Casa dos Jasmins – a gorgeous residence we had the pleasure and honour to interior design for our very special clients: an international jet-setting and entrepreneurial couple just relocated to Portugal.

Who doesn’t want to finish a busy day in a relaxing and beautiful bedroom?!
For that, your bedroom should be a well-decorated and functional space made exclusively for your needs and tastes. The design scheme should mirror all the vibes you need to have nice dreams and relaxing nights of sleep. A happy and chill life isn’t far away when we are at the job, just like this incredible room we designed for our latest project.
A bedroom is always a sacred space and we design respecting that!
Through juxtaposition and layering of materials such as American walnut, eco-leather, silk rugs, light-coloured fabrics, smoked glass, we achieved this rich and yet contemporary palette, balancing each element within a constrained framework of proportions and placement on our Sugar Quay project.
One of the first things in the design process is to decide whether to paint the walls or apply wallpaper.
By using wallpaper, you can instantly change the mood and style of a room. Make a room feel warmer and cosier with dark and luxurious wallpaper or make a small room bigger and lighter with a neutral or metallic wallpaper.
Our tip? Take a look at the amazing collections by PaperMint beautiful and unique wallpapers.
Bedrooms can be sanctuaries, a refuge in our own homes to recharge ourselves. A private and personal space where we can express personality, replenish our energy and simply be. Creating an environment that encourages sleep by using functional and beautiful design has been our focus for years. Check out our Rio Mansion project where this colourful, bright and well ventilated bedroom was brought to life.
When it comes to accessorizing in interior design, there are things you should and shouldn’t do.
You shouldn’t:
Spread accessories too much, diminishing their visual impact and significance;
Clutter your spaces with meaningless objects;
Choose accessories too alike;
Overwhelm small spaces with large accessories.
You should:
Add personal touches and memorabilia that you own, making that space truly your own;
Choose accessories that show your style and taste, making the whole scheme unique like we did in our beloved Sugar Quay project.
Uniqueness is of the utmost importance when designing an interior.
Our goal is always to create a space filled with unique items and accessories, rather than generic mass-manufactured products.
You can add that unique flavour to a design with: wall art, mirrors, a classic way of adding or setting the theme to a room; bringing nature inside, the mere presence of outside coming in is a big statement, like this one we did in our Sugar Quay project; using accessories with various finishes to create a smart and welcoming ambience to a room.
It’s incredible how accessories can impact a room.
So, we, the interior designers, should know how to use them wisely. One good tip is to choose quality over quantity, when it comes to room accessories, less is often more. Using the correct proportions and layering is also important in accessorizing.
And speaking of great accessories, the Delft Blue Vases by Moooi bring bold shapes combined with classic decoration adding romance and beauty to any design scheme.
A design scheme without accessories is an incomplete design!
Accessories play a vital role in completing and paying off the design. They represent the finishing touches; they also flash out the client’s personality and create the desired textures, shapes and colours to complete the decoration.
Accessories simply can’t be overlooked or ignored. A project isn’t done until you accessorize accordingly.
Royal and navy blues and crisp whites are usually the first colours to come to mind when we think about nautical-inspired spaces.
For our Chiado project, we doubled down on these colours to ensure the calm and relaxed nature of coastal living. To highlight the energy needed for this scheme, we also used bedding, area rugs, textiles in throw pillows and even wall decor that reminded us of the sea and the beach.
Nautical decorations are just fascinating!
White and blue look great together and give out all the calm and relaxing vibes that a home should have. Using stripes is also fun and is an effective way to make an impact on any given space as we did in our Chiado project.
We also love to take our themes seriously, so adding details inspired by the nautical life and sea memories was key.
Take a look!
The sea is a place where wondrous, fascinating creatures of magnificent and fascinating design roam, assuring beauty. Inspired by the vastness of starfishes, Linckia by Pullcast is a range of sophisticated and graceful handles entitled to create a sculptural scheme adding nautical-themed beauty details to your interiors.
Do you know that there is a modern style to nautical-inspired interiors?
Forget the clichés like boat paddles, life preservers, and sea-inspired decoration. The inspiration from the sea can also mean fresh colours and comfortable furniture that oozes calm and relaxed energy.
You can play with ottomans, weathering wood furniture and combine the look with clean-lined details. The term “nautical” can inspire different aesthetics among different homes.
The luxurious beauty that using tropical woods brings in interior design is incomparable!
Wood is one of the easiest to use materials in this and hardwood gives us the best quality and variety. By using tropical hardwoods like sucupira, jackfruit and jatoba, you can have quality, soft lines, elegant colours and strength in the design project. They can bring the right vibe while also being sustainable and durable.
Largely found in India, the distinct varieties of rosewood extracted from across the world add to the versatile applications of rosewood in the making of furniture, musical instruments, decorative items and veneers.
Rosewood furniture has many qualities like the beautiful tones that range from golden brown to darker brown streaks and its high durability and resistance. Inspired by nature’s magnificence, we present the HUANG Cabinet by Brabbu. It features an outside in walnut root veneer, an inside in rosewood veneer and details in matte hammered brushed aged brass. A new contemporary classic!
Wood comes in various colours, types and tones.
A lot like knowing which colours to use in your home, which metal finishes considering or what upholstery fabrics make sense for your family, mixing wood types and tones throughout your home makes a truly important part of a design project.
From the pine tree with its strong Christmas roots to the imported Brazilian cherry, the natural element of a wooden floor or china cabinet, wood can truly define the whole design scheme.
Good joinery makes an incredible impact.
Using bespoke joinery means you will get a unique, tailor-made space. Joinery also makes it possible to create unique wall finishes like this headboard panel like mosaic wood panelling and leather designed by Casa Alta Design.
Joinery is great for transitions between finishes, making them look neat and sharp in a project.
The last interior design concept of this week is scale and proportion.
This idea is all about how items can fit together in a space. Proportion is how well the elements in the design scheme tie together. Scale refers to how well the pieces fit in the room.
Even if it is the most mathematical interior design principle, you can easily identify when something looks out of place. For example, you wouldn’t pair a small sofa with a large, overstuffed lounge chair because it would appear disproportionate.
A room where everything gets equal importance will seem either scattered or boring!
The concept of emphasis in interior design is to create focus within a designated space. This method draws attention to a focal point in the room. And it also can divert the viewer from noticing a less desirable area of the space.
You can achieve emphasis using key elements of interior design: line, shape, form, colour, texture, and space.
Harmony is created when all the elements act together to create a unified message.
It’s like the feeling of sameness, the belonging of one thing with another. The repetition of interior design elements like colour, texture, shape, and form is one of the easiest ways to achieve harmony to create a composition.
By using harmony in interior design you can achieve that pleasing vibe: feeling like everything is right with the room.
In interior design, balance creates a feeling of equilibrium!
Balance is that feeling when you see a room and everything has its place, like a visual calmness. There are two ways to achieve balance: symmetry and asymmetry:
Symmetry uses the concept of having a mirror image, and it’s a great tool to create visual pairs and thrills. Asymmetry creates balance with items that are different but have cohesion amongst them.
Like colour, balance can show itself in many ways depending on the style you want to pick.

Always consider how the colours you use in a room will make you feel!
In interior design, colour psychology is the study that focuses on colour as a means of creating a specific atmosphere and mood. For that effect, hues are carefully chosen to invoke specific emotional responses in people and set a particular mood.
Research into colour theory shows that every factor like tint, saturation, and tone can have a different effect on one’s mood.
The Pantone 2022 colour is Very Peri!
Nowadays, we are living in transformative times. So, Very Peri is a symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through. As we emerge from an intense period of isolation, our notions and standards are changing, and our physical and digital lives have merged in new ways. Digital design helps us to stretch the limits of reality, opening the door to a dynamic virtual world where we can explore and create new colour possibilities.
Have you ever heard about chromotherapy?
The concept behind this popular term is not a new one – it dates back thousands of years. Chromotherapy is the art of listening to one’s instincts and senses and translating them into a choice of colours most suited to improve one’s well-being.
By knowing the effect of colours on a person’s mood and feelings, we can design an interior that gives exactly all the energies and vibes needed for the project like in this dental surgery where a gentle green palette was used to calm the nerves of dental patients who dread motors and needles.
Colours sometimes can be underestimated in interior design.
But they play an essential role in our lives. Colour is common language understood throughout the world. When we need to communicate something through interior design, one of the best methods to do it is through colour. Colour schemes are essential in interior design as they bind the project together, can be used for unique accents and are major players in creating moods and ambience.

Handmade furniture always has that own little set of characteristics, like tiny bumps or patterns on the wood, all the way up to beautiful, intricate, hand-carved designs that can’t be replicated by a machine.
These characteristics make them one of a kind, and they also can give your interiors the vibe that you want with more personality and storytelling.
Our interior design goal for this very laid back and relaxing beach house was to echo the charming rustic village where the house is nestled. We made sure that all materials were locally and sustainably sourced, preserving the lush nature around it. A tropical escape to celebrate life!
We say this over and over but here we go again, your home should tell your story! It should be unique to you and your family. When we cross the threshold we want to learn about you. Our homes certainly tell our stories and art and handmade pieces play a big role in that storytelling! Handcrafted pieces such as these gorgeous hammocks and bespoke sun loungers come in all different shapes, sizes, and price points. There is no right or wrong. It’s all about what works for you and your family, what fits your budget and what appeals to you spiritually and aesthetically.
We all want to enhance the comfort levels in our homes and soft linens, natural materials and handmade ceramics have a wholesome nature to them that exude comfort and simplicity. Handcrafted items make us feel more connected and I think we are all seeking a better connection within our homes.

Our ultimate Casa Alta Design tip for 2022? Fill your life (and interiors!) with love and all else will shine! Sometimes small gestures can go a long way, giving life a little nudge in the right direction. In this New Year, let’s all try a little nudge here and there. Little gestures like forgiving, loving, uniting and respecting ourselves and others.
Love & Design Make the World Go Round!
Happy 2022!
Many people choose carefully what to wear on New Year’s Eve based on Colour Meaning. In Brazil there is a tradition of wearing white on New Year’s Eve to symbolise bringing peace in the new year.
There are also other colours that are worn to bring love, wealth, and all sorts of good things such as pink for love, gold for prosperity and the list goes on.
Now here is an idea… how about changing the colour of your bedroom to bring new vibrations at home? We have gone for blue which symbolises intimacy, tranquility and wealth during the upcoming year.
Casa Alta Design Wishes Good Colour Vibrations to all in 2022! And a big thank you for all your support throughout this year!
…and some times nature just adds that gorgeous touch of blue to our project. To bring nature as a stakeholder to our designs, be it to add a colour, improve lighting or ventilation is always Casa Alta Design’s preferred way.
Blue is set to be one of the most popular colours for interiors in 2022. It can have a positive effect on mood as it connects us to a blue sky or ocean found in nature, which helps us to feel relaxed…Whether you add a dark blue feature wall or incorporate a blue textured quilt. The colour blue is known to help calm the mind and produce a feeling of tranquillity – and who isn’t looking for some peace and calm in the year to come?
Feliz Natal!
How about channelling a truly glamorous display this season with an opulent Christmas table setting?
The beauty of this type of table setting is that it’s opulent and festive enough to please all your guests. Bring all the beauty of crystals and gold-based decorations to dazzle everyone’s night.
Merry Christmas!
Do you want your Christmas table to look unique, different from any other setting? Go for a contemporary classic look!
This setting provides visual beauty and personal storytelling by mixing modern pieces with antique decoration. Then you’ll have a great dinner that is both environmentally friendly and beautiful.
Are you a fan of beautiful Christmas table decorations? Then always remember – plain doesn’t mean boring!
Simplicity is very often a key to success. A simple and minimalist decoration never goes out of style and this type of table setting is living proof of it. For a contemporary minimalist setting, choose one colour that you love and associate with Christmas and make it your theme tone. You could use dark blue or bottle green. Place mats can be the basis for a minimalistic Christmas table setting and use simple, natural and locally sourced foliage for decoration.
As beautiful and delicate as nature itself, the Bijout by @seriporganiclighting carries a romantic and whimsical sense of detail. The gentle glass pieces are designed to contrast directly with the complex and condensed bronze structure, in a combination of light and movement, and a multitude of colours and weights. For this composition, Casa Alta Design used a pre-owned rustic console table and design leather-clad bespoke louvres flanked by American walnut pillars.
Continuing our nature design week, we could not talk about nature and design without mentioning these amazing lights. Beautifully designed by Umut Yamac whose work is characterised by a multidisciplinary approach; exploring the middle ground between architecture and light, the perch light collection brings us paper birds, gracefully balancing on perches and with golden beaks and trails of precious metal in their tails. Under the perches, after daylight has faded, you suddenly realise that you’ve been watching them rock. All-day. In the rhythm of your exhalation, under the spell of their lights.
And talking about nature and design, we could not leave out this masterpiece especially designed by @marcelolamarca for our Rio Penthouse project. Lamarca’s work and nature are intrinsically connected and his fierce art is an accurate translation of the exuberant and exotic nature surrounding Rio de Janeiro.
Our love for penguins stems from our creative director’s Erika de Carvalho life-long passion for these lovely animals. When Erika was a child in Rio de Janeiro, her family rescued a lost and ill penguin and nurtured it back to life and to honour her childhood friend, we think that no freestanding fridge is complete without a penguin on top and Bosa’s dab Penguin does it beautifully. This penguin’s gesture (dabbing) refers to a pose struck by athletes after an exceptional performance or by footballers after a goal, a gesture of pride that recognizes a great feat, imitated by millions of young people around the globe. 60% of the world’s penguins have disappeared over the last 50 years, yet this penguin seems to say ‘I’m here and I’m a hero. This call for attention is meant to raise awareness about what’s happening to those (besides us) who live on planet Earth.
Calling all the interior designers!

Interior design trends for 2022 point towards neutral colours for bedrooms. However, do not worry. It will not blur the picture if additional bright accents added, and these will balance the environment. The core principle is to set a calm atmosphere and add bold details for a new splash of colour. Consider the following colours:
Neutral shade: Opt for beige, milk, gray, pale green, peach for a soft environment;
Bold colours: Consider any bright colour you like in a balanced quantity, creating key focal points in the room.
The eye of an artist is special in the way of discerning things.
All objects that artists choose to live with are meticulously considered to reflect who they are and what they like. And we love how artistic movements, waves and trends have always influenced interior design, highlighting personal and aesthetic connections.
The amazing Paris Design Week is coming!
From Wednesday 19 to Monday 24 January 2022, it’s time for architects, designers and design professionals to shine.
The beautiful city of Paris will host the new outdoor circuit Maison&Object In the City, so we at Casa Alta Design are looking forward to discovering the excellence and fresh new trends of French decorative arts.

There is a strong movement towards multifunctional spaces. It’s no wonder furniture design follows suit. After all, the flow of a home depends largely on the elements within it’s structure. And if you can cater to intimate social gatherings and reading nooks in one space, it’s all the better.
Smart furniture inevitably also includes pieces with integrated technology or design with function in mind. For instance, accent tables can also house speakers and controls, while remote-controlled shelving could slide open to reveal a television. Other popular items include multi-cornered couches, sculptural storage and surfaces, and speakers that double as decor.

Now that we are spending so much time at home, it’s important to pay attention to how flexible your home lighting scheme really is. For 2022, Casa Alta Design forecasts that proper home lighting will become even more essential due to new habits and needs. A mix of ceiling lights, wall lights, floor and table lighting fixtures in this scheme gives our client total control of the lighting scheme, adapting it to different tasks, moods and also natural daylight and the seasons.
Black accents are arriving strongly in 2022.
They give a contemporary edge to classic designs, and create an elegant tailored look. By using black accents in a design scheme you can enhance focal points as well as frame a scene.
We recommend choosing light, neutral colours for the main pieces of furniture and walls, like paint colours and large sofas and then incorporating black accents for contrast, anchoring the whole scheme.
Vintage pieces are unique and environment friendly!
We love how shopping vintage is truly a greener choice for design, while they also can give different and exclusive looks for a project.
By using vintage furniture, you can have a playful, fun and unique room. These pieces bring all their history to a design scheme with beauty and elegance.

Wood kitchens have been a Casa Alta Design favourite for many years. These kitchens offer warmth and charm and evoke an inviting feel. Wood is also extremely versatile and whilst some may think it suits a more traditional home with door styles like shaker, which make for a homely farmhouse feel, wood can also be incorporated into contemporary projects when designed and paired with modern features such as straight doors, contemporary handles or even handleless doorws and cutting edge materials.

Ergonomics has long been a buzzword in the workplace. And no wonder: over half of all workers suffer from back pain. This health problem could be avoided by maintaining the correct posture. Ergonomics is just as important at home as it is in the workplace – and especially in the kitchen. Wherever you have the same sequences of tasks repeated over and over again, the fittings in an ergonomic kitchen should be optimally adapted to the user, as in the case of working heights. This is the only way of preventing poor posture and thus chronic pain. In this project, Casa Alta Design customised the height of the worktops and shelves to suit this tall family and created easy access units where users can help themselves to glasses, crockery and cutlery without disturbing the cook.
While planning and designing kitchen cabinetry is an exciting part of any kitchen design project, it is actually the worktops that make the real impact. Yes, cabinets set a certain style and tone to your kitchen, but as worktops sit on a horizontal plane, the eye is drawn to them upon entering the room. Besides its aesthetics, worktops are the areas that you most probably use in your kitchen and they will need to be specified according to cooking styles. There is a wide variety of finishes out there, from professional clean-cut stainless steel worktops through natural and artificial stones to tempered glass. Which one is the perfect choice for you?
A mid-century modern kitchen is a great choice if you are looking for a timeless yet contemporary kitchen. Mid-century aesthetics are flexible and can be mixed and matched with other design preferences such as classic, traditional, and modern.
In addition, mid-century colours and materials can easily be mixed with newer materials and styles. Infusing a modern kitchen design with vintage 50s ideas can make a design scheme fun and dynamic. A straightforward way to start is to contrast bright white kitchen cabinets with rich timbers and soft curves to lend a modern mid-century charm to modern kitchens.

The Taj Mahal was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to house the remains of his beloved wife. Constructed over 20 years on the southern bank of the Yamuna River in Agra, India, the famed complex is one of the most outstanding examples of Mughal architecture, which combined Indian, Persian and Islamic influences. One of the finest examples of integration of marbles in interior design, we could not leave this gem out of our marble posts this week.
At its centre is the Taj Mahal itself, built of shimmering white marble that seems to change colour depending on the daylight. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983, it remains one of the world’s most celebrated structures and a stunning symbol of India’s rich history.
Each piece of marble is unique with its different tones, veins and colours. They have a unique character, resistance and a wide range of finishes, making them a fantastic but sometimes tricky choice of material. Natural stones are an exciting medium to work with not only for their versatility in combining with other materials such as wood, glass and metals but also that each and every single stone is different from each other. To ensure the quality and design of the marbles we integrate into our bespoke designs, we make sure our team inspects and selects every single slab integrated into our projects.
Portuguese marbles are not well known and more commonly specified such as Italian and Greek marbles however these amazing gems are fantastic to integrate in a design scheme!
If you want a piece with more luminosity, resistance and low porosity, look no more, they are perfect for you. Besides these amazing qualities, they also have thermal capacities, making them a great choice for interior designers.
The Estremoz Ruivina, a dark grey marble quarried in the city of Estremoz in Portugal and a favourite of ours, is a versatile option for amazing schemes.
Marquetry is the art of using thin pieces of a material such as veneer or marble to craft beautiful images and patterns.
Marble marquetry designs have developed a long way from the traditional in-lays with flower motifs and have become daring and inventive. Mosaïque Surface’s collection The Rêve d’Orient has been inspired by the beauty of Eastern Asian culture and the spirit of Wabi Sabi. Its deconstructed and imperfect pattern it’s a fluent translate of this ancient craft into a contemporary perspective.
Lighting Design International shined a light on Harrods!

Mixing different materials and elements is always fun in interior design!
Forget about the days when every piece in bedroom sets, living room furniture and lighting fixture collections all matched in a room. We love how mixing different materials and textures can bring true depth and richness to design schemes.
You can never go wrong with walnut!
Walnut has a very rich and inviting tone and can range in shades from mellow to dramatic. It can really make a room pop in classic and contemporary schemes. It’s also incredibly versatile and increasingly used not just for floors and furniture but as interior wall cladding too.

This week take a look at @maisonetobjet ‘s Welcome to Spain: a spotlight on the advantages of a varied and multifaceted Mediterranean offer, to create elegant, warm settings.
Now that the world has recognised working from home is more feasible, a home office is no longer a place where old laptops and dusty books pile up. They are now intense activity hubs where real work takes place.
This new arrangement is inspiring a new office design and feel, one where offices are becoming more than just a place to tick off tasks, but a place to bring people together, to be more productive and collaborative. For Sugar Quay our brief was to design a home office that would attend to all needs of our busy client who works from multiple cities around the world. Cutting edge monitor and camera, ample storage space and functional and comfortable furniture were a must for this design. The large ledges on the window were used as seats for quieter times and breaks between conferences.

One of the many lessons that this pandemic has thought us is that our homes are also our retreats. We all deserve to have a place in our home to recharge our energies and to treat ourselves. Be it a reading corner, a more comfortable bed or in the case a fully equipped bathroom with the most technologically advanced spa bathtub we have ever installed.
For this scheme have selected a combination of wood, dark technical stone, glass and dark bronze equipment to create a streamlined and yet rich ambience. The bespoke corrugated glass shower enclosure framed in bronze complementing the space.

Through juxtaposition and layering of materials such as American walnut, eco-leather, silk rugs, light coloured fabrics, smoked glass, Casa Alta Design achieved this rich and yet contemporary palette, balancing each element within a constrained framework of proportions and placement.
The scheme rises from the exquisite Da Vinci American walnut mosaic floor tiles by @element7flooring complemented by the luxurious 3D star silk rug by @therugcompany with furniture by @poradafurniture and @giorgettiofficial and lighting by @bellafiguralighting and @bommw_cz
Have a look to see how we really transformed this room
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Niemeyer created his own architectural language conceived as highly sculptural and expanding on the principles and innovations of Le Corbusier and modernism. One of his most well known projects, the Palacio da Alvorada, has distinctive diamond shaped pillars alluding to the hammocks stretched across old Brazilian farmhouses which inspired us for this gorgeous mosaic headboard.
The pillars that surround Palácio da Alvorada by South America’s iconic architect Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012) were an inspiration for this headboard in solid American Walnut mosaic combining two distinctive wood tones to create movement and depth. The suspended lights add to the organic free forms so loved by Niemeyer. The bespoke upholstered headboard ensure comfort and colour to this sophisticated contemporary scheme.

Corridors have to be well integrated into the overall design scheme. We at Casa Alta Design feel they are much more than transition zones, we see them like arteries feeding the brain, heart and all vital organs of a design. If the design of corridors are not well planned, all other vital areas could fail. Corridors are important and should be treated with respect.
Previously, the corridors in this apartment seemed to lead to nowhere and did not reflect the amazing property that was beyond it. Through the layering of materials such as polished concrete, marble floor tiles, bespoke contemporary joinery panelling and carefully planned lighting, we have transformed this area and made it coherent with the rest of the space.
Check out the transformation!
Dark colours and large-scale patterns that might overwhelm a living room or bedroom are ideal for the powder room. For this design scheme, we used a reduced palette of materials – large scale terrazzo tiles, American walnut cladding and bronze fittings – applied in a way to create an involving atmosphere.
Besides the colour and material palette, the lighting plan enhanced the features of the space and created a sense of privacy by being reduced to an absolute functional minimum with bespoke backlit mirrors and a single spot light centred on the majestic ribbed walnut pedestal sink.
@domustiles @samuelheathofficial @salvatori_official @nathaliepriem
To echo the client’s South American roots, we wanted to go beyond the obvious and readily identifiable signs. Something that could be beautiful and send signals of references to the ones who might know it.
We researched, deconstructed and translated a selection of iconic references to our design.
Newness, freshness and poetry dominate the aesthetic/constructive approach developed by the Campana brothers for their “Blow Up” series, in which the form of the objects is created by the play of shapes and spaces generated by the steel rods put together almost at random.
After analysing this collection we abstracted the perceived randomness of the design and incorporated it into a 6meter American Walnut ribbed wall panel in the main corridor. Manufactured in solid bronze and inserted into a polished concrete strip these random bronze “stick” design disguises the three hidden doors set into this long corridor.
@gscontracts @gayshaltd @chartwellgroup@nathaliepriem
In this scheme we have designed two informal seating areas with an island breakfast bar and a corner dining area by the window. To introduce an element of Biophilic Design, we have incorporated a suspended herb garden creating a lively and fresh background to the kitchen, complemented by automated sheer curtains which give privacy and natural light control to the space.
@kitchenarchitectureltd @bulthaup @tollgardshowroom @pendularis_official
To ensure that the design and levels of convenience and technology were coherent throughout all spaces in this project we worked very closely with Amy Chan @kitchenarchitectureltd who offered us an impeccable service and a great @bulthaup kitchen. By being the only piece of joinery which did not come from the same American Walnut log we had to ensure that the Bulthaup joinery matched as closely as possible the other pieces. Through many samples back and forth we settled for the solid walnut finish with thin reinforced doors. The single piece island worktop was also a challenge as it could not fit into the lifts and had to be carried many flights of stairs up but the kitchen team was determined to get it right and we thank them and all the other trades involved to make this kitchen a gorgeous one!
While planning the design concept for Sugar Quay, we wanted a design scheme that was warm and inviting but also modern and daring. This pre-owned rustic wooden console by the client and his wife’s passion for flowers, plants and @seriporganiclighting inspired us to create this striking lobby which is framed by wooden columns flanking a set of luxuriously leather cladded louvres which can be opened or closed controlling the intensity of light into the space.
The combination between rustic, organic and contemporary elements created a strikingly unique composition.
@gscontracts @gayshaltd
Open plan spaces are great but can also present design challenges in relation to acoustics and boundaries. In our Sugar Quay project, the lounge, dining area, lobby, balcony and kitchen are all interconnected and Casa Alta Design had to define each space by using the zoning technique. We have subtly created smooth but defined transitions between the areas by using the window decoration to define each zone. Ceiling levels, which vary slightly from area to area, also helped with creating a sense of independence from area to area. The acoustic and noise transfer between the spaces were improved by extensive wood panelling of the centre pillars and windows, a great material to absorb reverberating sound waves. And the smart dali lighting system automated by @esoundworks ensured that each zone worked independently and had its own defining character.

Sergio Rodrigues (1927 – 2014) is the biggest name in furniture design in Brazil, known worldwide as the creator of genuine Brazilian furniture.
The Sergio Rodrigues Atelier projects are carefully analyzed to deliver high added value products respecting every detail from the original conception of Sergio’s furniture.
For our Sugar Quay project, we had the pleasure of using the beautiful and iconic Diz Armchair supplied by @espasso.
Created in 2001, the Diz armchair has become one of the classics in Sergio Rodrigues’ production. Lightweight and extremely comfortable, thanks to its double curvature, it is made entirely of wood. In 2006 the piece received first place in the 20th Design Prize of the Museu da Casa Brasileira.

For this joinery we have developed a 3D puzzle with shapes, materials, colours, finishes and a playful take on creating and reducing depth through reflections and dark materials. The result is a shelving unit full of character which can be in constant change through the use of accessories, thus ensuring the long life of this bespoke design unit.
@chartwellgroup @gscontracts @nathaliepriem
There’s nothing like bespoke joinery in an interior design scheme. We at Casa Alta Design take pride in our joinery and have been honing our bespoke design skills for many years. This tailor-made living room joinery is a power house of technology all discreetly integrated into the scheme so that nobody notices it until is needed. This eight-meter-long joinery piece is divided in two distinct areas, a TV suite and a shelving unit assigning multi functions according to areas. We have used a deeply layered palette of materials and colours for this unit, thus transforming this joinery into a functional piece of art.
@chartwellgroup @gscontracts @nathaliepriem @esoundworks @josephgilesltd
Layering textures and colours is an art that we interior designers love incorporating into projects.
Through well considered use of different colours, textures and patterns, Casa Alta Design created depth and visual coherence in this design scheme. The rich tones of the walnut wood mixed with gold and the softness of the rug complement each other. Two great rivers of the world being translated into interior design – see our last post how this came to be 😉
@bocadolobo @therugcompany @nathaliepriem
Inspired by the iconic river Thames seen from all windows in this spacious living room, this scheme also references another great river on the other side of the world. The great Amazon river, surrounded by lush tropical nature with its amazing hues of greens, browns and gold.
The amazing views from the windows were incorporated into the design scheme by framing them with the warm tones of American walnut. The colour and material palette used in this area sets the tone for the whole project, creating a cohesive and streamlined flow through all rooms.
We transformed this 2200sq ft apartment set in the prestigious Sugar Quay residential riverside development with breath-taking views of the river and London’s landmark skyscrapers.
The apartment offered a blank canvas for the transformation. Our starting point was to create a design that reflected the client’s identity, tastes and needs, infusing it with a refined welcoming ambience.
The design team, led by director Erika de Carvalho, worked closely with the client and the team of contractors, project managers and suppliers to create a luxurious space yet completely functional and responsive residence. Inspired by the client’s South American roots and international lifestyle, our project concept was infused with contemporary Brazilian design references and focused on cutting edge technology to create a level of comfort usually only found in luxury hotels.
An outdoor lounge is a place for relaxation that makes you close to nature: shrubs, trees, scented flowers, water features and outdoor accessories.
In interior design, outdoor lounges are more casual versions of the overall design scheme indoors, making these places the right spot for calming and fun vibes.
Joinery is always a great solution!
After a thorough structural investigation in this project, we were informed that two pillars in this open plan living space had to remain. Our solution, to camouflage them with the reflections of the space and incorporate one of the pillars into a bespoke bar joinery. By using mirrors, the pillars not only “disappear” into the space but also reflect light and interesting project details.
How about turning your home office into a dedicated space that helps you get inspired and stay focused?
A home office space is ideal when it matches all your needs, tastes, whims, and personality, whether you make it on a corner of the bedroom or an entire room.
To achieve the best interior design scheme, we should never underestimate the importance of having plants as part of your home or office.
The use of plants in modern interior design is deservedly popular nowadays. They are the best accessories!
Plants can make rooms more appealing and lively while also helping your health. Indoor and outdoor plants can be used as accent pieces to give a more soft vibe or make the room pop out.
Outdoor dining is a must when the warm weather hits and the sun starts to show its rays.
If you want a beautiful alfresco dining space, attention to detail is key.
Achieve that goal by mixing a stunning outdoor dining set, the right accessories and great atmospheric lighting, and just like that, you have an outdoor dining experience that is out of this world.
One of the biggest challenges interior designers face is scheming and executing daring ideas while also maintaining a timeless sense of style and matching the interiors with the resident’s tastes and personalities.
For this project, we designed incredible metallic stairs with integrated lighting for our client.

Inspired by the client’s love for entertaining and the Brazilian way of life, this dining room handmade tile mosaic is a homage to a Brazilian design genius: Athos Bulcão. It reflects Rio’s bossa nova easy going, fun and modernist style.
Having an amazingly decorated house means that you can share it with your friends and loved ones.
If hosting is your thing, having the perfect guest room is essential to guarantee a memorable stay for your family and friends.

When you think about woodwork, what comes to your mind?
If it is cumbersome tables and orange varnish, you are late, my friend!
Today’s joinery creations and furniture come with a contemporary twist – shapes or materials that keep the pieces edgy rather than old-fashioned.
Rio Penthouse project is one of our most cherished projects at Casa Alta Design, not only for its complexity and beauty but also because of friendship. We ❤️ you @aartiwaghela. It was an amazing pleasure to design something truly bespoke and tailored to you.
Lately, we’re spending a lot of time at home. And for that reason, TV became even more necessary for binge-watching series and movies alone or with our loved ones.
But to truly enjoy your TV time, you’ll not only need a good streaming service! A comfortable and modern TV room is the right choice to chill and have fun for hours. And by bringing a contemporary vision and look into your living space, you can breathe new life into your entertainment area.

Natural lighting and ventilation are game-changers in any interior design scheme!
Natural lights in a room can create mood, enhance materials and give a lively feeling all around.
Natural ventilation is equally important. It allows the entrance of a cool breeze from outside during the warmer months and also helps in circulating the fresh air keeping your home interiors always fresh.
The success of any interior design scheme is in the details.
And we love how accessories are the best way to have incredible details and implement a unique colour palette!
Good accessorizing requires the most precise and careful planning to transform your home from a cute place to an extraordinary one.
The Montessori method believes that by thoughtfully preparing the curious little ones’ room, you can provide them more independence and self-motivation.
For that, you will need well-crafted and interactive joinery!
Check out a taste of this fun room that we did in our Bossa Nova Mansion project.
How about bringing more character, life, colour, and personality into your bathroom?
We believe that the bathroom is the perfect place to play with colours, whether you like your hues bold and eye-popping or subdued and soft. By doing a full-colour bathroom, you can be bold and expressive and have something truly unique.
When choosing outdoor furniture, you have to consider all the materials and fabrics qualities like durability, comfort and style.
A relevant factor is that outdoor furniture has to endure exposure to the weather outside. Choosing the ideal material for outdoor furniture is dependent on matching the residents’ needs with the inherent qualities of each substance since each situation is unique.
Rattan in furniture originally comes from India. It also became popular in Vienna, Austria, and started appearing in versions of classic design pieces, such as the Louis XV armchair and the Medallion chair.
Renewed and integrated with contemporary furniture and joinery, rattan has made a strong comeback thanks to the popularity of handcrafted pieces.
Incorporating artwork into an interior design project is one of the most effective ways to elevate the quality of the residents’ lives and make a significant difference for the better.
The art can be big or small!
Even the most subtle artwork can mean a lot and introduce a difference to the energy that your surroundings give you.
Handmade lighting pendants can create a mood in any design scheme.
By adding a one-of-a-kind handmade lighting pendant to your interior, you can have the look, style and vibe you wanted for the room. We always like to give the project the most inspired look while also reflecting the residents’ personalities.
We adore playing with fabrics!
By mixing different colours and patterns, you can find a perfect combination. Fabrics are a big part of interior design, and they can really transform how your room looks with amazing visuals.
Want to add textures and depth to your interior walls?
Try 3D wall cladding!
This type of cladding can bring dynamism and transform simple rooms into unique locations. Modern wall claddings take over the home with a captivating and timeless language.
The kitchen is absolutely one of the most important spaces in the home and is the centre of activity in family life.
Contemporary kitchen designs are all about creating clean, open, functional spaces with style and creative resources. And of course, it has to be moulded accordingly to the residents’ needs, tastes and daily tasks.
Do you know that a rug can define or completely change the atmosphere of a room?
That’s why when you are choosing a rug, careful consideration and planning are needed. One of the essential elements of a rug is its colours.
Colourful rugs are always a great choice to bring more fun and life to design schemes!
Colourful, surprising, creative, full of bossa nova. With this project, we honour the memory of this mansions’ original resident, the famous Brazilian singer Elis Regina and add new dimensions to suit its new residents – an international globe-trotting family.
“Casa Alta Design gets stuff done in places where people take ages, all with good taste and empathy of her clients’ taste and ideas” – Roman Carel
If your open-plan space has characterful features like exposed beams or support columns, don’t try to disguise them. Instead, let these architectural quirks enhance your scheme for a completely unique interior. In this gorgeous penthouse apartment, characterful ceiling woodwork was left exposed and darkened creating a dramatic feature and framing the kitchen/living area below.
Portuguese marbles can make a difference in an interior design scheme.
They have wonderful qualities like luminosity, resistance and low porosity. Besides these qualities, they also have thermal capacities, making them truly darlings in the world market and interior design.
In this project, we used Ruivina, a dark grey marble quarried in Portugal, giving this interior a more sophisticated vibe.
LEDs are energy-saving light sources that last for years and offer tremendous flexibility for interior design schemes.
They also can make your kitchen truly glow. By adding LED linear strip lights under your cabinets, you can guarantee maximum visibility in your cooking preparations.
Os LEDs são fontes de luz que economizam energia e duram anos, além de oferecerem uma enorme versatilidade para projetos de design de interiores.
One of the most celebrated singer-songwriters of our time, Bob Dylan also makes incredible visual art. His paintings share the same constant drive for renewal that he shows in his legendary music.
A keen observer, Dylan is inspired by everyday phenomena in a way that they appear fresh, new, and mysterious. His work provides a glimpse of an artistic process that is equally maverick and elusive.
We love a great oval table!
Do you know that the comfort and quality of your dining experience depend on factors like ergonomics, room size, table width and more?
Considering all that, an oval table can be a great choice considering the ergonomics factor. It can facilitate the conversation between guests because it provides a better view of everyone who’s seated.
Add attention to a specific feature in your interior with accent lighting!
This type of lighting, different from other types, has the aesthetic as its primary goal, creating a point of focus for the viewer. Accent lighting can add style, statement and drama to an interior and is especially suited to living and garden areas, entrances, and anywhere the objective is to showcase special features.
Open-plan spaces have become a staple choice for modern homes. They can make interiors feel more social and inclusive. However, lack of privacy and noise transfer is a notorious issue in combined areas specially between kitchens and living rooms.
That is why an open-plan space scheme should be carefully thought, designed and considered and interior designers are trained to do exactly that. The design has to be able to make the combined space reach its full potential without jeopardising any of the areas involved. Circulation flow, ergonomics and acoustics have to be well considered. For this project we have used a wide unused corridor to integrate the main kitchen and added a fully retractable sliding door system to one of its side so that the kitchen and living room can be isolated if needed. Scroll sideways to see the transformation.
A daring project where flexibility is key. Originally designed to serve as two independent holiday penthouses, these two adjacent apartments are currently used as a large four-bedroom family home. An acoustic sliding door partition between the apartments allow for these to co-exist independently or as one single unit, suiting whatever requirements its residents might have. When being used as a single unit, residents enjoy privacy and independence by the use of a formal and an informal living room and two kitchens that can operate as one continuous unit. The main kitchen serving as a connecting bridge between the penthouses. The gorgeous bespoke joinery, furnishings and decoration anchor this fun, contemporary and fresh Casa Alta Design project.
A bedroom in paradise..
Rustic and contemporary elements can complement each other very well!
The contemporary style is all about what’s trending right now, and that is neutrals, which matches perfectly with the rustic style’s emphasis on natural tones and textures.
The rich, warm palette of materials used in this apartment at Sugar Quay – a new development in the shadow of the Tower of London – give away the South American roots of its owner. The project is the work of Casa Alta Design, which worked with Tollgard as the main supplier of the furniture and accessories for the scheme.
Erika De Carvalho, Casa Alta Design’s founder and creative director, specified pieces from across Tollgard’s broad selection of brands, all of them united by their contemporary aesthetic and commitment to craftsmanship. Walnut detailing, natural marble and lush greenery combine to give a flavour of Brazilian modernism, without forgetting the distinctiveness of the prime Thames-side setting.
The brands featured include Giorgetti, Reflex Angelo, Fendi Casa, Bontempi and Moooi. Czech glass lighting brand Bomma’s ‘soap’ pendants hang either side of one of the beds (above): inspired by the iridescence of soap bubbles, each has a unique amorphous shape. In the hallway, a ‘Westin’ console table by Cattelan Italia showcases the combination of strong shapes and handsome materials that make this project so compelling, topped by a wild cat sculpture that’s an artistic homage to the owner’s origins.
Technology has offered great solutions for interior design, like purified air and temperature control, but nothing compares to nature’s refreshing breeze.
Take advantage of nature’s gifts using natural ventilation: an environmentally-friendly system that doesn’t need automatized tools. Apart from being ecological, natural ventilation is also very cost-efficient by using only external factors such as the wind and the temperature of the interior and its surroundings.
Tropical gardens can be truly magical!
When we hear anything about a garden in this particular style, our minds transport us to a place with romantic, exotic and relaxing vibes. But they are also very inviting and comfortable. Check out the beautiful garden we worked on in our Casa Patacho project.
A farmhouse on the beach with an eclectic combination of traditional, contemporary and vernacular details this project has been featured in several publications as one of the most charming beach houses in Brazil.
Casa Patacho project was developed in collaboration with the architecture studio @z_arquitetura using local products and techniques such as handmade tiles, aerated cobogo bricks, polished concrete worktops and solid sucupira joinery. The house was decorated combining items from the owners’ private collection as well as products from the local arts and crafts shop @tocadotatuloja. This successful mix gathered a lot of attention from the media with several articles being written about it as well as it being selected as one of the most charming houses in Brazil’s coastline.
Creating an interior design project without a well thought out lighting scheme is like going out for dinner and only eating what’s in the bread basket. The bread may be excellent, but you’re missing out on many more interesting dishes. Expertly placed lighting adds another dimension to a space, bringing an interior design project and the architecture to life. Great lighting creates depth and height, cosy spots, and draws attention to your most impressive areas. It’s all about the balance of light and shade and bringing new energy to an interior.
Whether you look out over a courtyard garden, a city skyline or a wide ocean horizon, the view from your home can be enhanced with clever framing and furniture placing. Just as mounting artwork inside a frame improves its appearance, so framing a view helps us to enjoy and appreciate it more. This can be as simple as painting a window surround or fitting shutters, but the effect can be surprisingly dramatic. When you create a boundary that contains a beautiful view within it, your eye can focus on it more readily and the scene becomes a living artwork.
For this project we commissioned the incredible artist @kellycamillozzi to paint a mural for this relaxing bedroom surrounded by nature and a quaint little village. The mural was inspired by the architecture and colours of the few rustic houses and vegetation surrounding the land.
This project provided Casa Alta Design with the opportunity to design every single furniture piece in the house using local woods such as jackfruit wood and the noble and hardy sucupira. The design focus here was to integrate the interiors with the vibrant local arts and crafts scene, and to do this we collaborated with the exquisite shop @tocadotatuloja which features incredible pieces by key local artists.
Contemporary classic and yet rustic and simple.
With sweeping views of a vast coconut farm, river and sea this project features a carefully curated collection of the most exquisite Northeastern designs and laid back interiors full of charm and local culture.
Have you ever paid attention to the lighting in your home?
Lighting is one of the most overlooked parts of interior design. The lack of good and proper lighting can make an enormous impact on your house.
Lighting has the power of affecting your vibes and even the overall perceived size of a space, proving that it is a fundamental element in any design scheme.
With proper lighting, you can change the atmosphere of your room, make the colours used in the decor more vivid, and even mark different areas of your home.
It’s time to integrate your indoors with the outdoors!
Indoor-outdoor design done right can elevate the pleasure and comfort of living in a well-designed and well-decorated space. You can have various details giving beauty and versatility in an indoor-outdoor design scheme. Dissolving the boundaries of indoor and outdoor can also bring more relaxation and entertainment into your home.
Staying outdoors it’s relaxing and invigorating during any season, but especially during the summer.
A porch can offer you the same comfort that you are enjoying indoors but with the bonus of making you enjoy the outdoors for resting, having meals and having fun.
If you want maximal cosiness, choose a more contemporary rustic style as we did in the incredible Casa Olivia.
Rustic decor is all about a no-fuss aesthetic that showcases the beauty of subdued hues, natural materials and comfortable furnishings. This versatile design style works in just about any space, including corridors. And while exposed beams are certainly a good start, it’s also worth considering original framing, flooring, and using locally available materials and crafts.
Rustic contemporary design is a blend of modern and contemporary features in a rustic, beach cabin, older or farmhouse style space. The term is also used to describe interior design schemes applied to some modern and contemporary interiors that incorporate local native features. In this project, Casa Alta Design has incorporated rustic and contemporary deco, with the assistance of local artists and craftsmen, to complement the gorgeous architecture project by @zarquitetura, a collaboration that lasts fifteen years. Casa Olivia’s name was inspired by our creative director’s daughter who was born on the same day of the completion of the project on site. A beautiful day all around!
Modular sofas, floating shelves, and furnishings with countless colour and size variations are seen as a great way to create flexible contemporary spaces. To give your place a cohesive look, repeat shapes, choose a striking dominant colour and patterns throughout the room. Placing outdoor furniture inside the home for a unique aesthetic is also a good idea. Apart from colour and size, selection and positioning are equally important. For example, in this project we have added a silver coffee table and navy blue sofa together with round pedestal plant pot behind a side table giving depth and addressing the room height.
We love the versatility of an open-plan space!
Open floor plans allow creating interiors that are beautiful and functional. At the same time bringing advantages like an abundance of natural light, the perspective of more space, and even new forms and possibilities of entertaining.
How about a green wall design to completely change the look of a room?
Eco-friendly interior decorating ideas are trending a lot lately, but designing green walls and vertical decorations with plants is a truly bold and impressive statement.
You can match a green wall design with beautiful plants, salvaged wood, wallpaper or even recycled glass, creating different and amazing details in a design scheme.
Wallpaper can change everything in a design scheme!
No matter what your style and home are like, we firmly believe that there is a wallpaper perfect for you, one that matches all your hopes and dreams for your home design.
With the right choices, you can actually fall in love and have an amazing relationship with your wallpaper. Like this one from our Chiado project.
“To take it to the next level” – that was the project brief for this ample apartment, frequently used for luxury holiday rentals, and set in a building planned by portuguese architectural legend Alvaro Siza.
Our response was to design a young, cool and vibrant space reflecting its bustling and historical neighbourhood of Chiado and the client’s friendly, easy-going and smart personality. Its maritime references echoing Lisbon’s glorious nautical past.
Like art, decorating and design rules are never written in stone however professional interior designers can really make a difference bringing it all together, creating truly unique moments.
Longing for a corner to day dream at home? In this project, we created not just a design scheme, but a full story to talk about!
A bedroom is the most personal space in a home and although it isn’t on display as much as other areas, how it is decorated is really important.
A bedroom should become an inviting haven to cosy up in as well as an invigorating space in which to wake up and start a new day.
Incorporating nature into the decor of bedrooms by using elements of biophilia can do just that. Research has found that even looking at pictures of nature improves our mood. So introduce some scenic views by way of pictures and make it the focal point point in you room. Or scale it up with wallpaper or large format pictures like in this bedroom designed by Casa Alta Design decorated with gorgeous pictures taken by the client himself.
Ever encountered a wall or pillar that should not be there but cannot be removed? What do you do with it?! – paint it white and try to (badly) ignore that it is not there or turn it into an eye catching feature, or even a focal point? This week our creative director, Kuka de Carvalho, will show you how to pivot structural challenges like this into amazing project features.
In this project we encountered a huge white wall separating the kitchen from the lounge. Our answer to this was to turn it into the most delicious feature, cladding the wall in black American walnut, adding LED strips to its top and bottom and assigning new functions to the wall – kitchen side: a breakfast bar and the living room side: a decorative feature with mirror, adding depth and grace to the space.
Campo de Ourique by Casa Alta Design – Interior Design for a 120m2 apartment in a vibrant Lisbon neighbourhood for a well travelled client with an exquisite eye for photography.
It is hard to find interior designers who do not like kitchen islands and peninsulas. If you can fit a standalone structure in your kitchen, there isn’t a better use of a space than transforming what used to be just a void into work , eating and storage areas. Not only islands and peninsula open up more eating, prepping, cooking, and entertaining room, but designed correctly they can make an outstanding statement that can truly transform a space as well as create great interactive and functional opportunities.
Not sure whether you want a tall unit, a wall cupboard or more worktop space in your kitchen? How about including all three by going for a concealed worktop cabinet.
You can use these handy units to add storage, conceal a workspace or even to balance the layout of your kitchen. In this project we have used the super ergonomic side opening Pegasus doors which makes access to the concealed worktop easy and maximise the internal space. Great way to keep small appliances out of the way such as coffee machine, blender and kettle.
At Casa Alta Design we are always searching for new sources of inspirations so we can deliver truly innovative designs. For this joinery, our creative director, Kuka de Carvalho, designed a code of patterns and colours combined with the Fibonacci sequence. By using a mathematical formula to calculate each of the module’s colour tones, size and texture, we arrived at this Golden Ratio Joinery creating a subtle spiral effect.
The Country Retreat design features a generous ergonomic island with rounded ends, vast worktops and a dark palette of colours contrasting with the light interiors.
When carefully planned, an eclectic mix of architectural and design features can work seamlessly, with no effort. For the refurbishment of this Tudor style mansion in the English countryside, we designed a daring state of the art contemporary kitchen. The design features a generous ergonomic island with rounded ends, vast worktops and a dark palette of colours contrasting with the light interiors.
Is cement tile the same as encaustic tile? NO. Cement (or more accurately, concrete) tile is made from Portland cement and is compressed, rather than fired like encaustic tile. Pigmented cement is hand poured into decorative molds until it sets, then the tile is removed and compressed under 2,000 pounds of pressure. It’s not encaustic because it isn’t made of clay, nor it is fired. It is typically made in 8×8 inch squares. They’re installed in the same manner as ceramic tile, with one major difference. Cement tile needs to be sealed with two coats of penetrating sealer after it’s been set but before grouting. There is dry time in between, and the entire process takes 10+ days. I suppose both ceramic and cement tiles were popular at the same time in Europe, and likely both referred to as “encaustic” tile. @decorologist thank you for clearing that nagging question for us!
What if you could have a more fitness lifestyle in your own home?
Home gyms were already on the way to become a popular trend long before the pandemic, but unsurprisingly they gained a lot of momentum during lockdown. A lot of households made space for a yoga or gym corner or even whole rooms.

Wooden slats are a big trend, they are present in interiors, exteriors and the most diverse elements and pieces of furniture. They can cover walls and create partitions. They also appear on doors and shutters, headboards and other items such as benches or tables. It’s a great way to bring three-dimensionality to spaces and make them more welcoming and sophisticated.

An eclectic approach to decorating can be challenging. For advice on how to create a balanced and eclectic ambience, read on… Incorporating antagonist forms and textures add interest to interior schemes, especially when choosing a simple colour palette as a base with splashes of colours as accents. Consider rough surfaces next to smooth mirrors, slender forms with rounder ones, mix old and new. Be brave, throw fear out of the window and follow your own path to uniqueness as in this daring scheme Casa Alta Design developed for our super cool clients.
During warm months enjoying outdoor spaces at night is a must. For that, lighting for outdoor spaces have to live up to their full potential. It’s a valuable tool for creating mood and atmosphere and a basic requirement for safety and security. Expert interior designers will find the right balance in lighting to create safe and comfortable environments considering the transition between a patio area and adjacent outdoor spaces to avoid blind spots. In this Casa Alta Design project we ensured that the lighting does not take away the charm of summer evenings, creating a gentle and layered lighting system for the plants, swimming pool and exterior structures.
Do you know that a textured wall can add warmth and character to your interior?
Previously outdated in the past, textured walls are back and giving space for artistic expression and also being functional hiding signs of drywall installation.
This trend allows adding modern characteristics that make classic elements blend effortlessly with a more modern decoration. With these amazing walls, you can even simulate any natural elements, including stone, wood, and marble.

Do all kitchens need to be white or with natural woods? We don’t think so!
Pink kitchens were one of 2020’s top trends and still are going strong this year. Bold and striking pink kitchens are dominating all over social media.
The colour pink can be warm, cheerful and playful in an interior. And also is a versatile colour, you can match it with black, grey, or even concrete, giving that edgy and industrial vibe.

During the warm summer months, some of our favorite spaces to design are outdoors—porches, patios, courtyards, dining terraces, pool decks and rooftop gardens. The finishes, furniture, lighting and accessory options for these spaces are continually expanding and evolving, allowing for greater variety and creative approaches. A particularly fun aspect of designing outdoor spaces is that you can really pop up the color. If there’s one space where you can feel free to go bold, it’s outdoors! In the Casa Alta Design outdoor design scheme we planned bold and bright patterns for the loungers as well as locally made vine mandalas by the oldest artisan in town, the amazing Mr. Amaro.

Forget about using vases for holding flowers!
Now it’s the time for statement vases that can transform an interior in a moment.
You don’t need flowers to make your interior beautiful with an amazing vase. The statement vases trend is all about big bold, oversized designs and unusual shapes that are changing the game in interior design.

A vintage mirror can completely change your living room, giving it an antique charm that looks incredible when balanced with contrasting modern pieces. Let’s not forget, also, that a well-placed mirror can be decisive for improving the perception of space and improving lighting.

A Toast to the simple things in life at Casa Patacho – interiors by Casa Alta Design.
Bronze is beautiful, sustainable, durable, weather resistant, and antimicrobial. This incredible metal is so versatile that depending on its shade and use it can be the highlight in contemporary as well as classical interiors. Its proven antimicrobial characteristics are so relevant now that we think everybody should wear a little bronze every day. In this Casa Alta Design project we used brushed bronze, one of its lightest shades, as handles for a bespoke dressing table.
If you’re looking for a luxurious, sleek and amazing shiny look, you have to check using silver in interior design.
Only as a cool metal, silver can give a room a cold and unwelcoming vibe.
But used in moderation silver details and items can easily help brighten up your interiors. Whether brushed or polished to a mirror shine it’s hard to resist silver’s sparkle power.

Do you know what material is eco-friendly, long-lasting, continuously recyclable, antimicrobial and versatile?
The answer is copper!
You can use this incredible material in various ways to give an outstanding aesthetic to your interiors. From small decor details to statement pieces of furniture, entire kitchens, or showstopping feature walls. Copper finishes can be as shiny as a bright new penny, brushed and buffed, hammered and rustic, or even patinated green.

Green and blue is a familiar colour combination often seen in nature. This duo used here on the furniture and in accents such as accessories and art helps establish an inviting atmosphere in living spaces. The colour palette of this Casa Alta Design project was multilayered with several references such as the gorgeous Portuguese sea and tiles and hints of art deco.
For some of our projects, colour can be the motor engine that drives the whole scheme like this one where a vibrant colour palette was created around some pre-owned and new pieces.
At first glance this Casa Alta Design project might look like a riot of color, but after taking a closer look you will realize there is a fairly tight colour palette here inspired by blues and greens, with splashes of oranges and reds. The secret for keeping a tight but colourful palette? Working with various hues within complementary color families. “Know your colour wheel” is our mantra at Casa Alta Design.
Continuing our special colour week, we bring you today the sage green kitchen trend!
Sage green kitchens are quickly growing as one of the biggest kitchen trends for this year. Doesn’t matter if it’s paint, cabinetry or tiles, this tone is appearing everywhere.

If you are looking for something beyond neutral tones, it could be an opportunity to be brave and find unconventional ways to add more colour to your interiors.
You can give your room a joyful, fun and unexpected vibe with colour bombs.
By adding small details like colourful furniture and accessories, or bolder accents like this green ceiling, spaces can be completely transformed and its energies renewed.

Lighting pendants over kitchen islands can enhance visibility on the work area as well as frame the area and make a statement. In this Casa Alta Design project we designed the light pendants in a linear position reflecting the island layout, creating a sense of continuity between the spaces connected by the kitchen.

When experienced interior designers start out a lighting plan, we think about many aspects of lighting including what activities take place in each room (eating, relaxing, working), key features of a room that need to be highlighted, what architectural boundaries need to be taken into account and the existing natural light. Early planning is key for a successful lighting project.
A layered approach to lighting with different light sources across different levels create ambience and interest in a room. Lighting can make the most of a room’s size and shape –uplighting makes a room feel larger, low hung pendants will create an illusion of height and clusters of lighting make large rooms seem cosier.

Lighting can affect your mood and even the overall perceived size of a space, it is an essential element to any design scheme. Proper lighting can alter the atmosphere of your room, enhance the colours, highlight features. Essentially, there are three types of lighting designers use to create style and functionality – general lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting.
@globalcitizenssolutions @goldcrest_portugal
Lately, people are paying more attention to how artwork and especially graphic art can make a room stand out. Whether it’s on a canvas, a print, a pillow or even a mug, artwork can always make an interior look cool and different.

Let’s talk about the structured simplicity trend!
This trend aims to create a calm and comfy space to relax. It transforms your interiors into an inviting space to rest and regenerate. The furniture used in this style feels warm and inviting with comfortable sink-into sofas and hearty tables to gather around.

Continuing last week’s theme, we love the way this dining room designed by Casa Alta Design smoothly connects with the outdoors and the view. The inner space of a structure and the exterior façade are usually two completely different entities. We love the reverse idea that these two elements can together creating a seamless transition.

A big part of Interior Design is to think how conductive of interactions these new spaces will be. Who would you choose to enjoy this gorgeous view at Alto do Tatu with you and what would you be talking about?
Transform that formal interior into totally your own!
Turn your focus on functionality and say goodbye to too formal dining rooms or living rooms you only use sometimes. How about changing that dining room into a home office, a place where the kids can do schoolwork or even just a lounge where you can relax on stressful days.
It’s important to have useful spaces that reflect our energies, vibes and personalities.

What do you think about the idea of seamless indoor-outdoor living spaces?
This is a popular trend that keeps growing in 2021, with a renewed objective on transforming the outdoors as an extension of the home. Fire pits, pergolas, pool cabanas and alfresco dining spaces are at the top of many home improvement checklists lately.

Powder rooms may have been the last items on your list when considering home renovations or refreshes. We’re here to persuade you that even the smallest spaces can be a magnificent room. For this scheme we have designed a bespoke black marble sink and mirror. The dark atmosphere creating a type of cocoon, feeling sheltered and comfortable. Check it to see how it was before!
A quintessentially classic colour, navy blue dates back to 1748, when it got its name from the color worn by officers in the British Royal Navy. Since then, the strong association with all things noble and nautical has not faded. Navy used in interior decoration continues to evoke images of the ocean and freedom.
Classic blue was named 2020’s Pantone colour of the year and we believe it’s here to stay!
But sometimes you have to be careful with blues because some can make you feel sad. In this case, the room also needs bright colours, like yellow or gold to achieve some balance.
By painting your walls a calming colour like blue, your room could be transformed into a place for relaxation, so you can exhale on a hard day.

It is spring in Portugal again and the lovely Andorinhas are back. As these migratory birds always seek to build their nest in the same place where they previously inhabited, they became a symbol of Family and Home. They also have a single partner during their entire life, and therefore also stand for Love, Loyalty and Faithfulness.
Like art, decorating and design rules are never written in stone however professional interior designers can really make a difference bringing it all together, creating truly unique moments.
Dining tables are matched with celebration, good and fun times.
But they also can give more depth and sophistication to your dining room. You can have a more simple or more complex space, it depends on your style. From mid-century to contemporary, you can have incredible dining room atmospheres connecting luxury design and craftsmanship.

How about adding soft and comfortable elements to your space?
You can play with a mixture of textures, like linen and wool on sofas and armchairs and warm wood tables, to make a comfortable place to relax. Texture and warmth make interiors feel lived in, a great feeling for colder months.

Mixing styles can create surprisingly interesting spaces. There are very few “pure” decorating styles. Most styles are a blend of several different eras and periods when artists, architects and designers take the best of certain periods or trends and incorporate these elements into spaces, clothes, objects and art. Here is Casa Alta Design’s take on design mix in this impressive tudor home with a startling contemporary kitchen.
@pedinicucine
Accessories play a major role in complementing interiors and help in revealing your style and personality. Whether you want to give your home a modern or traditional look, accessories will always be key features in achieving the right ambience and conveying the message properly. Yes! Accessories will do a lot of the “talking” in interiors.
Furniture is the basis and the backdrop of an interior design project, but accessories make all the difference. Without small elements such as paintings, plants, candles, boxes, jars, vases, among others, the spaces are stripped and deprived of personality.

This amazing project took place in the house lived by Elis Regina, the iconic Brazilian singer, in the 60s and 70s. Since then, life dynamics have changed, so have residential interiors. Here we designed a new open plan kitchen allowing to cook and socialize at the same time, creating better traffic flow and turning a dim kitchen into a bright, airy room.

Ergonomics analyses the relationship between the human body and the objects we use and the spaces we live and work in, in order to optimise movements and avoid unnatural postures. The kitchen is one of the areas that most benefits from ergonomics. It ensures ease of use and allows you to move comfortably in the space based on your physical requirements and habits. Have you ever thought that you can move between the dining table and kitchen over 30 times a day? That you can open and close drawers, removable shelves and cabinet doors over 80 times a day? That you can complete over 50 tasks every day at the kitchen worktop and sink?
Can you imagine having art above your bed?
With the rise of the boutique hotel and its trending look in residential design, the headboard has become an incredible focal point in bedroom design.

Colours play a huge role in energizing a space and lifting up the spirits. Do not be afraid of colours! The colour wheel is the absolute guide to pick the right combinations and balancing out opposite and complementary colours. We also experiment with unique colour palettes, carefully tailored for each project. In this super colourful project we integrated pre owned pieces into a daring scheme and a bespoke colour prism rug.
Circadian lighting is a new concept that people use in their homes to regulate the body’s rhythm. This electric lighting style is designed to mimic the natural sleep and wake patterns of the human body. Longing for a corner to day dream at home? Casa Alta Design creates not just projects, but stories and dreams to talk about!
Interior design is all about balance – nothing really has a value on its own until it is thoughtfully and carefully placed with many other things. Accent colours can play a key part in achieving that harmony, adding small doses of contrasting hues that can draw the eye, add visual interest and tie everything together. In this project, we have framed the architecture with dark wood details, creating a tailored look that complements the space.
Gone are the days of plain painted walls or wallpaper!
A trend that has become more popular, and will continue to do so this year, is polished concrete plaster and chalk finishes. This trend is more about adding texture where you can and that also includes the walls of spaces.
What do you think?

In 2020, video games market size was estimated to be worth 60.4 billion U.S. dollars, with some professional gamers earning up to 15 million US dollars per competition. Video game room designs are also evolving and no longer have to look like something out of sci-fi movie to tend to only teenagers. For this special client we have designed a sophisticated living room that doubles up as the perfect grownups gaming suite with state of art sound systems, blackout shutters, 85” TV and a super comfortable sofa.

Have you ever wondered why interior designers know when the décor is spot on and when it misses the mark? Perhaps you think they just have the knack, but it takes years of study and practice. One the many things interior designers study and practice is the ancient Greek Golden Ratio formula. When you understand the Golden Ratio and the 60/30/10 rule, you’ll know why a room doesn’t quite come together and when the design of a space will feel good from the get-go.
Lighting is one of the most important elements in interior design – it changes the atmospheric mood of a room, creates a powerful sense of identity and transforms interiors into a seamless combination of functionality and style.
And what is best to transform your interior than a glamorous chandelier?

Building a beautiful entrance lobby can set the mood for the rest of the space, be it a home, hotel, shop, office. First impressions, a welcoming atmosphere, setting the mood, all these and many other ideas count… at Casa Alta Design we call the process of designing an entrance lobby “SENSE OF ARRIVAL.” Have you thought about how you want to ARRIVE at your home or business?
To work with local artisans is one of our passions at Casa Alta Design, a more sustainable and economically supportive way to make local communities more vibrant. For this piece we designed wrought iron legs manufactured by a local blacksmith and re-purposed a rustic sucupira wood slab from the neighbourhood carpenter. We love simple ideas that make a difference!

A popular choice in interior design, the quarter-turn (L-Shaped) staircase has a 90-degree turn, either in the middle or at one end or the other. During these times when we have to spend so much time at home, why not recreate a relaxing tropical garden corner indoors?
By embracing the nature major trend for 2021, organic materials are a reality within home decor trends. Organic, design elements in the home can give us the feeling of nature inside our homes, bringing calm and welcome vibes.

Tropical interior design can be applied to any style or room. Simple touches such as a potted palm and a pair of shell lamps, the introduction of natural and earthy colours all contribute to a tropical atmosphere. By complementing the palette with natural materials such as wood, stone and bold tropical prints the space can be made cozy and interesting. To make it all work together, interior designers will evaluate the role of each of these items and ensure a perfectly balanced space.

Minimalism is an art movement that began in post–World War II Western art, most strongly with American visual arts in the 1960s and early 1970s. In interior design, minimalism came back with full force in the beginning of the 21st Century and since then have had many reinventions. The style embraces the concept that the home should be a tranquil, relaxing space, free of clutter but full of style. These designs rely on quality of detail, furnishings and artwork to make a huge design impact whilst avoiding clutter and non-essential objects… Marie Kondo would be pleased

When it comes to choosing art for interiors, too often artwork is treated as an afterthought. When chosen thoughtfully, art has the ability to transform a space and infuse it with personality. For this project we commissioned the incredible artist @kellycamillozzi to paint a mural for this relaxing bedroom surrounded by nature and a quaint little village. The mural was inspired by the architecture and colours of the few rustic houses and vegetation surrounding the land.
We believe that interior design is an expression of our client’s personality and lifestyle. And one of the best ways to express that is with wall art, photographs, paintings, sculptures or even bespoke designs. For this much loved project and client in Rio de Janeiro, we designed a special neon wall feature embodying the client’s bold, daring and feminine personality… @aartiwaghela , we love you!
The artwork selection for our award winning dentistry clinic Glow Dental had to go hand in hand with Casa Alta Design’s research on the calming properties of chromotherapy and nature on patients. When also interior designer and artist @piersmerlino showed us his abstract photos of the Eden Project, we knew we had found the perfect solution. We are always in the search for interesting artworks for our projects, and would love to hear your recommendations in our comments! Please share the love…
The Wellness and Nature trend is rising in 2021. This trend needs materials and finishes that combine natural stones, light woods, neutrals, more cream colours and some greeneries.

Originally designed for vinyl record aficionado, the Patacho shelving unit proved to be a versatile furniture piece that has been turned into book shelf, alternative clothes storage, shop display and many other uses. We have seen this bespoke piece being turned into so many things that we are now curious to see what else it can be transformed into… any ideas???
The tonal layering trend is a simple and effective way to infuse colour into space. It offers possibilities endless and enduring. This trend also allows experiments with colours that won’t become stale. When pulling from the same or similar colour families, one can feel safe knowing that their choices won’t date fast.

If you got tired of your door to the backyard, then what about a new one with a more modern opening. A glass door can make you connect with the outside and enjoy the garden at any time of the day.

Natural materials such as white marble are perfect for a minimalist bathroom as they provide a sense of sophistication and cleanliness to the room. By using a simple palette of materials such as marble and high gloss lacquer, the overall look of the space can always change by using accessories to add colour and interesting focal points.
How about adding an element of glamour to your kitchen? Bring some wow factor to cabinets by using mirrors which can correct scale and proportion.
We can’t think of a material that’s more versatile or more impactful. Large or small, ceiling or wall, the contribution that mirrors make is huge. They can take your design from good to great.
The Playful Design Trend consists of bright and cheerful spaces. With big blocks of colour, whether if you choose different colours for the interior division or one bright colour block.
You can opt for a bright colour in your chairs that will immediately give another look to your living room. A colourful rug with some pattern is perfect to add that vibe in clean and neutral rooms.
The excessive use of colour can sometimes be overwhelmed, so be careful when mixing them and use reflections to echo details.

Well… if we are talking about reflections this week… why not go super-size with mirrors? Create an illusion and make small spaces look double their size by reflecting the interior and light.
Photo by: Infinity Glass and Mirror
Reflection seems to multiply space. It adds visual interest. It magnifies all the design elements you’ve put in. It can bring additional light and depth to a room. It can showcase accent pieces placed in front of it. It can define spaces. It changes as you walk through a room, creating interesting new sight lines. It can even let you be in two places at once! Use and abuse it, says our creative director Kuka de Carvalho.
Inspired by these angular sea creatures, Crab Side Table by Casa Alta Design, is versatile and fun! It works well in bedrooms as well as living rooms and verandas and are handcrafted in sustainable and certified woods.
You can always find a design trend that captures the essence of your personality!

Have you thought about using a neutral colour wall to widen your room?
The white colour aims to provoke a feeling of more space, increasing the amplitude of the room. If your living room is small, be sure to bet on neutral tones!

Tropical Bathroom Recipe by Casa Alta Design:
2m² reclaimed wood
1 ½ m² mirrors
1m² Colonial Green high gloss lacquer doors
10m² Matt Satin Wall Pain in off White
A handful of quality bathroom equipment
Sprinkles of Natural and Artificial lighting
Foliage and Flowers to taste
So what do you do if your new home’s hallway is a long white corridor? Worry no more… we are here to transform it! For our new London project @ Landmark_Place, we have done just that. Previosuly, the entrance to this apartment was via a bland corridor that simply did not reflect the amazing property that was beyond it. Through the layering of materials such as polished concrete, marble floor tiles, bespoke contemporary joinery panelling and carefully planned lighting we created a sense of arrival that welcomes its residents and guests, echoing the interior design and architecture of the space.
Holographic Avant-Garde plays with the mind and the space by transcending beyond “normal” aesthetics – the goal is to create something wild but, at the same time, charming. This trend can conjure a space that will stand out.

Dried flowers are on the rise. They are present in several photos on social media: positioned at the foot of mirrors, on windowsills, or in elegant vases placed on the floor. These arrangements create a real highlight in the space where they are. They still bring a charming subtlety. Besides, dried flowers are practical because they can last for years, making the house beautiful for longer!

Maria Montessori’s philosophy of encouraging creativity and independence applied not only to the classroom, but also to the home. She believed in the importance of creating a space where everything is within a child’s reach, even from a very young age, hence the idea to design a Montessori bedroom. Play and movement area for babies and toddlers.
If space allows, place a soft rug in the room, along with a low-lying shelf with room for toys and books. For newborns, display a few eye-catching toys and family photographs. For this nursery Casa Alta Design planned a bespoke wardrobe, shelving and desk unit which allows easy access and also doubles up as a blackboard for drawings and notices. Existing shelves, pictures and day bed were seamlessly incorporated into the design. The playful wallpaper and gorgeous fabrics by @lamaisonpierrefrey give this nursery special touches of warmth and fun!

As the end of the year approaches, we gather hope by looking back at everything that the Casa Alta Design team has accomplished with the help from our friends, collaborators, suppliers, contractors & clients. During lockdown in Europe, we made the difficult decision to reduce our operations, work from home, not accepting new projects. The next four months were very hard and it was with a heavy heart that we saw many of our friends and collaborators being sadly touched by COVID-19. Since reopening our office, we have been very fortunate to start new projects and to be able to complete existing ones. The last semester has been one of our best ever and we believe that this is due to the trust in our work and a pivoting attitude to our homes –now doubling up as office, gym, spa, playground, school. We are humbled by all the love received & we’d like to thank you all for your support and trust. Wishing a happier, healthier and brighter 2021 for everyone!
Following this week’s earlier post with design tips on challenging walls and pillars, here is one of our favourite project solutions for two very “stubborn” pillars that wanted to be part of our design J After a thorough structural investigation, we were informed that two pillars in this open plan living space had to remain. Our solution, to camouflage them with the reflections of the space and incorporate one of the pillars into a bespoke bar joinery. By using mirrors, the pillars not only “disappear” into the space but also reflect light and interesting project details.
Have you decked the halls with your best Christmas decorations?
While wreaths, stockings, and your classic well-appointed pine tree are de rigueur this time of year, your decorations can always use a refresh. Admittedly, Christmas decorations can feel a little constricting, as if straying from a red-and-green colour palette will land you on the naughty list. But as it turns out, Christmas decor is packed with unlimited design potential—you just need to get a little creative.
Merry Christmas to everyone! Photo by: @serenaandlily
The mid-century modern style of interior design was popularized during the 1940s, and has yet to leave the mainstream gaze—for good reason. Defined by clean lines, organic forms, minimal ornamentation, and high functionality, the style has an undeniably timeless appeal. While some homeowners will commit to a fully mid-century modern home, anyone can easily infuse this look into their living rooms with a few simple tweaks.
Ever encountered a wall or pillar that should not be there but cannot be removed? What do you do with it?! – paint it white and try to (badly) ignore that it is not there or turn it into an eye catching feature, or even a focal point? This week our creative director, Kuka de Carvalho, will show you how to pivot structural challenges like this into mazing project features.
In this project we encountered a huge white wall separating the kitchen from the lounge. Our answer to this was to make into the most delicious feature, cladding the wall in black American walnut, adding LED strips to its top and bottom and assigning new functions to the wall – kitchen side: a breakfast bar and the living room side: a decorative feature with mirror, adding depth and grace to the space.
Following our post on integrating plants at home earlier this week, here are some further tips. Today we will show you that there are many fun and creative ways to bring plants into the different areas of your home and a small wall garden can be just as effective as a picture or mirror. By using small planters or a decorative planting set it’s possible to keep a variety of wonderful, fresh herbs and plants that will not only decorate the space, but also add freshness to a scheme.
Art Deco can represent luxury, glamour, exuberance, and faith in social and technological progress. An Art Deco Maximal look brings a result that joins emotions and self-expression in home design.

Due to its porosity, marble has been a vilified kitchen top option for a long time. Although gorgeous, natural marbles are extremely susceptible to stains and require care and maintenance. So if you love the look of marble but hate the work of keeping it pristine, worry no more. Artificial stones that look like marble are very much like the real thing but much tougher against stains and require little or no maintenance. For the perfect contemporary kitchen, try mixing marble finishes with wood cabinets, creating an elegant and at the same time warm ambience.

The Clean Air Study was a project led by NASA in association with the Associated Landscape Contractors of America to research ways to clean the air in space stations. Its results suggested that, in addition to absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen through photosynthesis, certain common indoor plants may also provide a natural way of removing volatile organic pollutants (benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene were tested). Kuka de Carvalho, our creative director, has five top tips for integrating plants to interior schemes:
1. be realistic and always do your research before buying or planting anything
2. create privacy with a hanging garden
3. if you have lots of room height, why not go for a gorgeous tall tree
4. don’t forget the bathrooms
5. use nature as an accessory and add it to unexpected places.
We are not afraid to dare at Casa Alta Design and we just love every design opportunity that our clients give us. Each design unique in their own ways and echoing their life stories. In this project we planned the interiors to reflect the client’s eclectic and well-travelled backgrounds and interests. This resulted in a fusion of elements – 3D handmade ceramic tiles, gorgeous bespoke mirror joinery by @fernandoherrero, abstract art and sink & top in the purest white Thassos.
One of the top trending topics of the moment is the revival of the 70s in interior design. The 70’s Chic Throwback is a definitive example of how the concept of vintage is coming back in strength. If you already have a mid-century decor style then adding some old-school elements from this decade will make it feel even more special.

The way we light up our spaces has been changing radically as designers combine technology with a differentiating aesthetic. Architectural and sculptural forms echo in the chandeliers that increasingly assume themselves as protagonists of rooms. A bold chandelier is, in fact, a good choice for a minimalist environment. It is a way of introducing a differentiating element that prevents the decoration from being monotonous.

We believe that each of our interior design projects tells a story. Anchoring is one of the design processes we have developed at Casa Alta Design that helps our team make these new stories truly unique. In this project we have anchored the decoration on the local arts and crafts available around the site. The furniture was designed using local woods and artisans, decorative art and objects were locally supplied and flower arrangements were designed with regional plants and flowers. This project was so well anchored in its relationship with region around the site that the little red boat does not want to leave its dock. ☺
At Casa Alta Design we believe that interiors should not only be comfortable, functional and inviting but they need to also tell a story. For this project in Lisbon, we worked closely with the client to curate some amazing photographs he has been taking on his travels around the globe. After the photographs were selected, our team researched a number of professional photo printers and framers that would complement the client’s gorgeous art photos. For the master bedroom we selected several colourful nature related pictures, bringing a contemporary and daring edge to the space.
By providing a connection link between nature and modern interior design, the Modern Naturalité trend seeks to transform all those organic scents, textures, flavours, shapes and colours into breathtaking pieces of furniture, lighting and upholstery. This style brings the same magical rhythm and melody that nature brings to us every day in an interior design approach you will find absolutely charming and wild.

Ceramics keep getting stronger and stronger in the trends charts. Jars, vases, bowls, teapots, sugar bowls, ceramic dinnerware will be a strong trend for 2021. Portugal is in fashion when it comes to ceramics. Major brands choose to develop their ceramic lines in the country. Everything handmade! Claudia Schiffer wasted no time and developed these beautiful Cloudy Butterflies in collaboration with the iconic Portuguese ceramics Bordallo Pinheiro and Vista Alegre.

Kitchens have evolved from purely functional areas to spaces that converge practical and social activities, making it truly “the heart of the home”. Kitchen appliances and furniture have evolved to fulfil these new needs creating a bridge between function and beauty. For this London showroom project our creative director, Kuka de Carvalho, curated a chandelier extractor by @elicarionuova and curved kitchen peninsula by @pedinicucine.
Open plan kitchens are one of the most sought after features of a modern home, thanks to their light, spacious and versatile design. They usually combine the kitchen and dining area of a home, while you can also include a lounge setting as part of yours. They are in fact completely versatile which is, quite frankly, the reason why we love them so. In this scheme we have designed two informal seating areas with an island breakfast bar and a corner dining area by the window. To introduce an element of Biophilic Design, we have incorporated an herb garden creating a lively and fresh background to the kitchen.

Encaustic tiles are on the rise nowadays. They are small pieces made of pigmented cement in moulds made with a hydraulic press. These pieces were very fashionable during the 70s, and now they returned with innovative designs and vibrant colours that capture the attention and send us to the incredible Portuguese tiles. The “new normal” has changed many habits and routines and the Home Office trend is here to stay. If you are planning to convert a room or a corner of a room into a home office area, here are some tips from our Creative Director Kuka de Carvalho: – ensure that your home office is well lit and has enough natural light, if possible. – Place a wall mirror or TV to reflect light making the space feel naturally larger. – Invest in good storage units to keep clutter away. – if there is enough space, why not try to create a relaxing corner like in this window sill seating.

Curating and editing is a precious skill when designing interiors, specially when an already lived in space is being redesigned. If you are going through or considering de-cluttering a space, try these two simple design hacks: 1) use light coloured curtains or blinds to visually widen spaces, 2) Reduce your colour palette. Too many colours can make a room feel cluttered but that doesn’t mean that you have to stick to just beige or white. Choose a favourite colour and play with its various tones like in this white and green scheme.

How to use materials in a bathroom to create a striking and inviting atmosphere? For our new London project, we have selected a combination of wood, porcelain stone, glass and bronze metal to create a streamlined and yet rich ambience. “The key point in this design is the position and area dimensions where the finishes are applied. Use rich, deep colours to decorate small areas, accents and flooring. To keep the scheme rich but still avoiding overcrowding, keep larger surfaces toned down or with an even colour, like the base of a canvas ready to be painted on.” Kuka de Carvalho, creative director Casa Alta Design.

Detail, detail, detail… at Casa Alta Design even how the water flows from a tap matters to us. Contemporary bedroom with exquisite leather headboard and american walnut diamond mosaic by @fameedkhalique.
Ergonomics and free flow were important key factors when designing this bathroom to be used by three kids. Non-slippery but smooth surfaces (here we treated the polished concrete floors with a special anti-slip resin) and cleverly hidden drains allowed a continuous floor between wet and dry areas, allowing the kids to roam freely within the space – even if wet! Easy to reach baskets allowed the kids direct access to toys and towels, a simple but effective way to help them to be independent during shower time.

Playing with a reduced but diverse palette of materials can be a fun way to bring interesting layers to otherwise small and plain spaces. Previously a small storage space with an annexed toilet, for this bathroom we used only three materials: wood, ceramic tiles and glass. By playing with different tiles styles and patterns (encaustic tiles for the flooring and glazed metro tiles for the walls) and using the wood as accent for the countertop and mirror, we created an eclectic yet streamlined space. The interest in skincare grew a lot more during quarantine and social isolation months. Colour is an essential part of interior design, and it can be used to create a particular atmosphere, enhancing or calming moods or to spruce up an existing scheme.
Professional interior designers are trained to understand colours and translate them into interior schemes. Here are some basic colour tips:
Colour has 3 attributes; these attributes have to be combined and carefully considered to create a balanced scheme:
When considering a new colour scheme for a project, always think about these three factors and remember to layer your colours and patterns to balance them out.

The current “new normal” situation created by COVID-19, has made us rethink our work and social patterns and how these new rules have to integrate into residential and commercial environments. As many of us are now working from home for the first time, it is no surprise that a sizeable amount of our new enquiries are to design new home office spaces. Here are some tips on how to choose the perfect area for a new home-office.
One of the biggest complaints about home office is interruption. So firstly, try to choose an area or room where it is most unlikely to be interrupted. Then check if the chosen space is noisy – can you hear cars passing by? Is it near that neighbour that loves playing the drums at 12pm? Or too close to the kids’ bedroom?
Once you have ticked these boxes, think about the quality and direction of the light into the room. Is the light adequate? Too weak or too strong? Does it create a glare effect on your computer screen? too many shadows? A diffuse light source which is not too warm or too cold is always a winner.
If you have a window in your office area, think about the position of your desk in relation to it – would you like to face the window or would you prefer to have it on your side so that you are not distracted by what is going on outside?
We have many more tips on home offices… if you have a querie, please email it to us on info@casaaltadesign.com and we will give you some handy bespoke advice.

Elegant and sensual movements are part of La Belle Étoile’s visual grammar; the suspension is inspired by the graceful twirling of a ballerina. The lightweight yet unbreakable lamp is completely handcrafted in @slamp_official’s atelier. The dialogue between technological innovation and stylistic originality speaks loudly: the LED source can be easily and quickly changed thanks to the exclusive magnetic hanging system, and a white texture printed on transparent polymers, are elements that combine to create refined, contemporary design.
We adore this unique piece! What do you think about it?

In almost every interior design trend, colour has the power to create an ambience that we all relate to in our homes. Pastel colours have come a long way from only showing up in baby nurseries! Today they lend a relaxed feel to your living spaces, they add a retro appeal to your kitchen appliances and are uniquely modern in neutral paint colours for your entire home.
